Working the Trend: How to wear a Bouquet of Vintage Florals

Welcome to a new series, “Working the trend.” In this series, I will provide tips, tricks, and inspiration for working a current trends.

One of the current trends I adore is the floral trend. I’ve noticed many of them have a vintage feel—ranging from a new take on Victorian to florals that look picked from the 60s and 70s. These are so much fun and have so many ways they can be worked a stylish wardrobe.  Florals tend to give a more feminine and pretty feel, but can be integrated into a variety of different styles, can work for anyone, and, while they are often thought of as spring or summer prints, they can be worn year-round.

Tips and tricks to work florals

Mixing prints:

Flirt outfit

• Do mix florals with other prints! If you are unsure of mixing prints, looks for perforated or embossed shoes or a handbags in a neutral color and wear with your florals for a way to try out mixing prints—and check out my previous post on mixing prints (check out the Matinee outfit or the Off-the-Shoulder outfit)
• Or go with stripes or a plaid—both are always a nice contrast for florals.
  • For a put-together look, match the main color in the floral with a main stripe color, as show in the Striped trench outfit
  • Or go for a plaid shoe with a floral top for a fun print mix  made easier because it is separated by a solid, as shown in the cold-shoulder cami outfit

 

Accessorizing:

Do you think he is posing too? Dress outfit

• For floral tops, think of accessorizing with a statement cuff or bold shoes to draw attention first to the top (for examples, see the Parlor outfit, Crush outfit)
• Or go for a striking necklace on a bold print for a statement outfit, such is in the Dress outfit
• Put a hat on it or a jacket to polish off the outfit and weather-proof those flowers, as in the is in the Dress outfit and Flirt outfits
• Complement your florals with some funky, fun, sparkly, or otherwise interesting shoes to make a statement from top to toes (as shown in all outfits)

Working the colors:

• Look for soft muted colors, for a more subtle floral that can work as a neutral (also the Matinee outfit)
• Or look for bright florals for a pretty pop of color (as in the Crush outfit)
• Or go for bold florals on a neutral, such as navy, to pop the flowers and add a level of sophistication, as we see in the Off-the-Shoulder outfit
• Pop the flowers by wearing a solid bottom in the same background color of your floral top (or solid top in the background color of you print bottom)—this will also add some length and look put-together (see the Cold shoulder outfit)

Florals to look out for:

• Look for unexpected florals, such as the Crush Top (shown below) in vibrant red with delicate, Victorian-inspired roses in pinks, blues, purples, yellows, and oranges
• Look for a top and a bottom in the same floral so you can wear them together for a dress or jumpsuit/romper look or separately with other pieces (following these tips) for versatility, as you can see in the Flirt outfit

Styling the flowers:

Matinee Outfit

• For an edgier look, wear the florals with destructed denim (check out the Matinee outfit or the Parlor outfits for examples)
• Update the vintage florals with modern cuts and styles, such as these wide-leg crop pants from Ann Taylor (Marina) (check out the Off-the-Shoulder outfit for an example)
• Combined striking floral top or bottom with a neutral bottom or top to focus on the floral (check out the Crush outfit or the Kimono Outfit for examples)
  • Feel free to match the color of the florals with your shoes or accessories, but consider keeping everything else subtle or natural though to not overwhelm (as shown in both the Crush top outfit and the Parlor Outfit)
• Or pop some florals beneath a striped trench or long jacket for a touch of pretty, such as in the Flirt outfit
• Mix the florals with practical and even more masculine pieces, such as utility or cargo pants,  safari style, and military style for a strong yet pretty look, which is shown in the Off-the-shoulder outfit
• Dress down a flirty cold-shoulder top with skirted-leggings or other comfy, casual bottoms, as shown in the Kimono outfit
• Go easy and comfortable, with soft knits in neutrals, leggings, and a drapery floral topper, such as a kimono, such as in the Kimono outfit

Winterize or fallize your florals:

• Look for florals in colors of that season, such as the rich colors in the Off-the-shoulder outfit
• Wear florals that may seem spring or summer with winter or fall layers and colors, like a long burgundy sweater, brown leather jacket, or dark olive pants (the latter shown in the Off-the-shoulder outfit)

Mix with other trends!

Parlor Outfit

• You can add a military/explorer feel by wearing your florals with the on-trend new neutral, olive. I love the toughness of the military vibe olive can provide mixed with the feminine feel of the florals, such as in the Off-the-shoulder outfit.
• Go cold shoulder or off-the-shoulder with your florals to combine two trends in one blouse! Florals seem to work particularly well with the peek-a-boo trends. They add some sweetness to the sexy of the bare shoulders, such as the Dress outfit, Cold shoulder outfit, and Off-the-shoulder outfit
• Or wear your florals with a split back, such as the Parlor Top, to add a chic and fun element that adds some interesting when you turn around—look great coming and going!
• Rock the trends on your toes too—those funky, fun, sparkly, or otherwise interesting shoes can be trendy too. Consider a funky heeled sandal in the bootie style, lace-up heels, or jeweled sandals, as shown in all outfits.
• Mix the soft, feminine florals with the edgy, tough destructed denim for a play on contrasts—see the Matinee outfit.
• Wear your florals on a kimono—the very on-trend topper (see the Kimono outfit).

Some florals I am currently loving:

Matinee Outfit

Matinee Top: This color and print of this top reminds me of something my grandmother would wear, in a very good way. She was an artist and the watercolor floral print is something she would have loved and the colors would have looked great on her.  The print feels a bit 70s or maybe 80s to me. The button-up style works well for work, but the flowy swing shape works well casually too. The three-quarter sleeves are perfect for summer and add to the uniqueness of the top. While a lovely chiffon, this fabric is sturdy enough to handle hanging with my nearly-four year old.

Crush Outfit

Crush Top: Another cabi piece, this is such a fun top that mixes bright red with delicate feminine roses in colors such as pink and purple. I’d expect these flowers to have a different color background, but the red makes to modern and not sticky sweet. The ruffle is a chic addition. This top works week casually, under a blazer or cardigan for work, or dressed up or down for a date. It’s a versatile, enjoyable top.

Off-the-shoulder Outfit

Off-the-shoulder Top: This JustFab top is already sold out, but they have a few others that have a similar feel. I love the striking tropical-colored florals in the dark navy background. It really pops the florals without being too bold. The print works well in the off-the-shoulder style—it might be too much if it had the extra fabric covering the shoulder and upper chest! This top also have a lovely tie in back for added interest (and more of that looking good coming and going trend!).

Parlor Outfit

Parlor Top: This exotic and lovely top always gets compliments when I wear it. The print reminds me a bit of a postcard from the tropics in the 1950s or 1960—vintage and striking. I adore the colors: pinks, cream, warm brown, green, turquoise, and blue. It’s a soft flowing chiffon, with merrowed edges, a slit back, and cap sleeves. I love it with destructed jeans for a mix of soft and edgy. It’s also a great layering piece or summer top.

Flirt Outfit

Flirt Cami: This was one of my first purchases from the cabi Sprint 2017 collection and is a favorite. The floral print on the navy background reminds me of a calico in vintage quilt, but more striking. The navy also make it highly versatile and easy to mix with other pieces and layer. It is comfortable with jersey lining and an easy, fit with some forgiveness, but is still flattering. It’s got a little keyhole or peek-a-boo element in the front that is still fairly demure. I’ve worn it as a top alone, or under a jacket or cardigan for work. You can also make it into a dress with the Flirt Skirt.

Flirt Skirt: Made of the same chiffon floral print of the Flirt Cami, this skirt is equal versatile. It’s a mini skirt, but not too short. The wide elastic smocking is both flattering and forgiving. It make a nice dress with Flirt Cami, a lovely skirt to dress up or down, or even can be worn as a sleeveless top!

Dress outfit

Off-the-shoulder Dress: The smocking on the top of the dress reminds me of this 1970s sundresses and dresses. Together with the floral print, this dress is reminiscent of a smocked calico dress I had in my dress-up box as a kid. This modern take on the 70s classic has the trendy of-the shoulder style, a bolder print, and a side slit. The midi length is playful, on-trend, and easy to wear. I tend to dress this dress down, but it is also fun as a date night style. Here I show it with some boho for a festival vibe.

Cold Shoulder Outfit

Cold Shoulder Cami: Another navy background floral—these are so versatile. Navy is a color for every season, but with a fondness for summer as a softer dark summer natural. The bigger, bolder florals are striking, yet feminine. This is lined with a comfy knit and the easy fit makes it comfortable. I love dressing it down, as shown, with the m’leggings or destructed jeans.

Gwenifer Kimono: This pretty, flowy Paradigma kimono has a lovely pink, blue, purple, teal, and green vintage floral print that is heavy on lilies.  The white back ground makes it easy to style. It’s become a go-to for me this summer. I love it with these m’leggings or the distressed rollup slim crop. The easy flow is fun and feminine. It can be worn as a cover-up too. I tend to just throw it on whenever I need layer.

• Casual dresses and skirts:  I’m taking my June challenge and running with it again for July. I wear skirts a lot to work and dresses not much. I’d like to work on wearing both more and doing so casually—not just for the office.
• Giving the clothes some love: I (shockingly, right?) have a large wardrobe and some things get forgotten. My challenge this month is to find those things and wear them—new or old.

More about Plexus Slim:

Ten Great Transitional Spring Pieces to wear now!

Spring—the season of change and transition. It’s also the season where you can get frost and even snow one day and warm temperature the next. And when it feels like spring or even summer in some parts of the country and winter in others. My mom recently got snow, while it was almost 80 here in Georgia. It’s that time of the year when we transition from our winter wardrobe to spring. We all want to be wearing the spring colors, cuts, and prints, even if the weather won’t let us. It’s a hard time to figure out what to wear. Luckily, the Spring cabi clothing collection has the perfect pieces to take ups from snow to flowers! Here are ten pieces you can rock now, even if there is snow on the ground, and later when it gets warm(er)!

Flirt Cami: I was not sure when I first saw it. But then I fell in love when I tried it on. This has become my go-to for a touch of spring. I love how it features the vintage floral trend but with a modern feel. It has an easy fit and is lined with jersey for comfort. It is a bit longer, so it can cover a bit more. I love it with… well… anything. I am showing with two other favorites, the Pocket Cardigan and Zip Skinny jeans. Another favorite outfit is the Flirt with the Zip Skinny and the amazing Gossamer Pullover. The semi-sheer of the pullover shows off some of the print of the cami. Plus, the longer cami length provides a cute layer under the pullover. Want a dress? Go with the Flirt Skirt, which is made from the same fabric. For work, consider the Grand Slam Blazer. Or for a casual look, wear it with the Easy Topper or Classic Cardigan and M’Leggings. The Flirt Cami would also be cute with the on-trend bomber jacket (like the blush JustFab Classic Bomber Jacket), the in flair crop (such as the High Waisted Frayed Crop Flare also by JustFab), and would be lovely with one of the trendy chokers (consider the Plain and Simple duo by JustFab)

Zip Skinny jeans: These jeans are AMAZING. They are so sexy on, without being obvious. They do wonderful things to your booty and the fading is flattering to your legs. The grey is a wonderful year-round color. The weight is perfect for now. Of course I love them with the Flirt Cami and Pocket Cardigan, or, as mentioned above, with the Gossamer Pullover. As jeans, they go with anything! Consider the Terrace Cami for a monochrome look, or the Cold Shoulder Cami for a hot date night look. For a sexy boho chic, thrown on a peasant top, like the JustFab Peasant Top, as I did.  Roll them to show off some of the cute on-trend booties or sandals, like the floral embroidered Loreida Bootie or the Payton lace up sandal (both from JustFab).

Pocket Cardigan: The easy sage and tan cardigan has unique flare with a single pocket, draped front, and low-high styling. It works as a perfect neural to throw on when chilly. Of course, I love it as shown with the Zip Skinny jeans and Flirt Cami. For an office look, consider the Matinee Top. Wear it with the Laid Back Tee for soft take on a monochromic look. I love it with the M’Leggings and the Flirt Cami again. For a pretty, feminine look, consider the JustFab lace Cold Shoulder Top or either the cabi Lace Cami or the Prudence Top.

M’Leggings: These skirted leggings are always a favorite of time, and this season they are navy! I love the skirt, because it means I don’t have to worry about a longer tunic to cover my booty and front when wearing comfortable leggings. It’s also a sexier look that still allows one to play on the floor with their kid and not flash anyone! I adore them! Of course, they are great as shown with the Classic Cardigan and Parlor Top. Or the cardigan and the Flirt Cami. For an athleisure look, try the Cross-strap Tank. For a patriotic look, consider the Carousel Tank. For a boho look, consider a peasant top, such as JustFab’s Crochet Peasant Blouse. These are so versatile, comfortable, and practical.

Classic Cardigan: This lovely light-weight knit cardigan is perfect for days that start out cold and get warmer. I love that is its navy—giving you a spring color even on colder days. It’s longer, so you can wear it with leggings, but the fit is still flattering. This has become a go-to piece for me. I love it as shown, with the Parlor Top and M’Leggings. Or switching out the Parlor Top for the Flirt Cami. It’s great with the Dame Skirt, Flirt Skirt, or a trouser (like the Skipper) for work. It’s lovely over the Veranda Top. As a new neutral, this cardigan can go with anything and it dresses down or up easy!

Parlor Top: This is a gorgeous top with a small split back. It has fading vintage floral print, with butterflies adding a pretty pops of color.  It is a layered chiffon for a flowy look. It’s feminine and flattering. Of course, I recommend it with the Classic Cardigan and M’Leggings. It is also great with the Tidal Skinny (regular or curvy). I love it with the green Banner Sweater. For a date night look, consider the Dame Skirt. Then add the Grand Slam Blazer for a work look and a day-to-night outfit! Consider some destructed jean for a bit of an edge, like the Mojave Slim Boyfriend. This will bring some spring to you, even if you have to wear it under a heavy cardigan!

Grand Slam Blazer: This nod to nautical double breasted blazer has a flattering tailored fit, gold anchor buttons, and removable striped knit cuffs. It is a timeless piece that has an edge of trendy with the cuffs and shorter sleeves (sans cuffs). The classic navy color is always in, and, as a new neutral, it goes with everything. It can be easily dressed up, or as shown here, down. I love it with the Mojave Slim Boyfriend jean and the New Stevie Top (as shown). For a suiting look, consider the Top-Notch Trousers or the Dame Skirt. I keep wearing mine with the Mixed Plaid Blouse by Two by Vince from Le Tote (use my referral link for a free Tote!). Rock it with white jeans for a preppy look, such as the Slim Boyfriend jean, or wear it over a dress for a sharp layer (consider the Knot Dress or the Everyday Dress). New Stevie Top: This is a spring version of the great Stevie Top from the fall. It has a relaxed but flattering fit, an open neckline, and a longer length. The bright yellow is a fun spring addition, and it pairs wonderfully with all the on trend spring navy, including the Grand Slam Blazer, as shown here with the Mojave Slim Boyfriend jean. I love it with a cropped, destructed skinny, like the Distressed Rollup Slim Crop from JustFab. It is great too with the M’Leggings for a cute and casual look. It plays beautifully with white jeans, like the Slim Boyfriend jean. Thrown on the Maritime Trench or the Victory Sweater for a striking look.

Mojave Slim Boyfriend: These comfortable, more relaxed jeans are in the on-trend mid-tone blue with light destruction, for a stylish lighter look with an edge. They are comfortable and great rolled or not. While they do great with the Beachcomber Hoodie and Flirt Cami, these jeans will rock with nearly everything. Dress them up with the Grand Slam Blazer and the New Stevie Top (as also shown). Pair them with the Cold Shoulder Cami for a great date night look. For a fun, casual look consider the Carousel Tank. Consider the amazing Gossamer Pullover with a cami (maybe the Flirt Cami) for a casual, pretty, and edgy look. Or add a peasant top for some boho chic edge (such as JustFab’s Peasant Top).

Beachcomber Hoodie: This piece I was not thrilled with, until I tried it on! Then I fell in love. It’s a sweater knit hoodie, and now available in white or this great, bright Heather Rose. Sea Knot Necklace: This gold and silver necklace with sea knots is a perfect for early spring. The nautical theme is on-trend and it goes just s well with a hoodie as a tank! It cane be worn as two strands, as I am here, or as one longer single-strand necklace that is half silver and half gold. Spring into Improved Style: My Personal April Style Challenge

It the time for new beginnings, growth, and cleaning out the old. This makes it the perfect time to improve your style! Maybe you want to start wearing wellies for some April showers puddles. Maybe you want to try some of the new spring colors. Maybe you are sick of your winter style and need some spring.

I have two style challenges for April:

•   Nothing says spring like skirts and dresses. I have been bad about wearing them, so I am challenging myself to wear them more often!
•  I will continuing to post-closet clean out organization and wearing those clothes that do not get enough love! With the clean out I “marked” all the clothes as unworn (hangers backward for hanging stuff, inside out for folded) and I want to work on making sure I am wearing these pieces or getting rid of them. I want to be better about not just wearing a few go-to pieces and taking advantage of my larger and awesome wardrobe!  

My Plan

• Wear more dresses and skirts, especially casually, as I just have not mastered this and don’t do it. ·
• Look for pieces I am not wearing and integrate them into my outfits.

Do you practice Lent? I am not Catholic, but I often practice Lent as an exercise in self-awareness, recognition of my privileges, consciousness of those less fortunate, and away to improve my life and the world. I do not tend to do a subtractive Lent, but additive. I will add things to my life for 40 days. A personal style challenge and Lent work perfectly together! It’s a great opportunity to remove a bad habit—like always wearing black or add a new challenge, like wearing more skirts.

For March and Lent I have two Personal Style Challenges:

• Give up: I will not buy any new clothes in the month of March  
• Add to: I have a few that are not style related, but for Lent I am going to try to wear at least one garment that is not getting the love it deserves. I managed my closet clean out in February, although I am still finishing that up. I have a lot of clothes I love. But if I don’t wear them, I shouldn’t keep them.

My plan:

As we wrap up the twelfth POW, our versatile Beyond Tee, let’s start by reviewing the eleven different styling techniques I showed you to style this amazing top. Which is your favorite?

1) Basic Beyond Tee

1. Put it on the frontwards way with the tag in back for a lower neckline
2. Make sure the tunic and panels are not tucked in
3. Go!

4) Sexy Side Wrap

1. Put it on the normal way, with the tag in back for a lower and more date-ready neckline
2. Tuck the bottom of the tunic part of the tee shirt (not the panels) into your skirt
3. Choose the side you want the tie and ends to be, it is best to do it on the side of the panel that overlaps on top of the two panels (left side)
4. Take the panel on the opposite side (right side) and pull is diagonally across the front of your body to the opposite hip
5. Take the panel on the knot side (right, and keeping it on top of the other panel), wrap it diagonally across your chest to the left hip
6. Once it is at your hip, gather it into more of a tie shape than a flat panel
7. Continue with the right panel, wrapping it around your hip and continuing to wrap it behind you, from your right hip to left hip
8. Gather both panels at the left hip and tie them, letting the ends drape down your side

5) Draped Curves

1. Put it on the normal way with the tag in back
2. Take each panel and wrap it around your side to the back, with right panel going to the right and left to the left
3. Cross the panels in back, pulling the right one to the left and left one to the right
4. Bring the panels around to the front
   • Keep the panels at waist level 
   • Keep the panels smoother, not gathered 
   • Check your wrap—the left panels should now be coming around your right side and the right panel around your left side
5. Take the top corner of the bottom of each panel and tie in a knot at your natural waist
6. Let the bottom corners hang down, creating a fun draped look that will emphasize curves while hiding the tummy

6) Long Vest

1. Put it on backwards with the tag in front for a higher and more professional neckline
2. Tuck the bottom of the tunic part of the tee shirt (not the panels) into your skirt
3. Wear the panels down each side as they naturally fall
4. Add a thin print belt at your natural waist for curves

   • Open: Pull the panels more apart, creating an inverted V shape that show more of the bottom of the outfit under than the top

I’m amazed at how versatile the Beyond Tee is! It is probably the most versatile piece I own. So, it is perfect for travel; small closets; limited budgets; busy professionals; moms; and busy career moms; and stylish fashionistas of all types! I adore mine, in case you can’t tell.

Unfortunately, I wrote this after the cabi Fall 2016 season has closed, which means this amazing top is no longer available via the traditional means. It is also such a unique piece that I’ve been unable to find an alternative to suggest. However, if you must have this piece, here are some ways you may be able to get it:

• First, always try your stylist. She may have a sample available, know of another stylist with a sample available, or have other ways to get it. If you do not have one you may reach out to my stylist Joni Allen (via email or phone: 770 502-5243 [call or text]), Leigh Cheatwood-Harris (a friend’s stylist whom I have worked with also and can recommend: email and her site), or find a cabi stylist near you.
• Second, check out resale, such as the Facebook groups or apps that allow people to sell their cabi or ebay.
• Third, wait until August, when the outlets will get the Fall 2016 line and to go or call an outlet to see if they have this. Many outlets will allow you to order over the phone and then ship it to you.

A few more Favorites from the Fall 2016 cabi Collection—On the last day!

As I stated previously, the fall cabi 2016 collection was one of the best I’ve seen. The season end moved back, and now today, January 8th is the last day you may buy it! I previously shared some of my favorites, but I wanted to take the opportunity to share four more pieces that I adore, which are part of a fabulous and cozy outfit.

JustFab: Duluth Fuzzies and Lace Up choker.

Edie Dress: This fabulous and comfortable Little Black Dress is flattering with a 60s mod feel. The chevron seaming under the chest slims and accentuates curves. I also find there is a bit of “extra” fabric at the tummy, which works wonderfully to hide any belly, without adding bulk. Since this dress is a ponte knit, it is comfortable and easy to move in. It can easily be dressed up or down, or even worn as a tunic. I particularly like it in the outfit shown, both dressed up and down for an overall fun, cozy, and elegant look.

Foxy Scarf: This may be my favorite piece from the 2016 fall collection. It is luxe, comfy, warm, and practical. You can easily throw it on whenever you need some extra warmth. The dark tips and layers of silver and black give it a more natural and classy look. I love it dressed up, but you can also rock it in jeans and a white tee. Think of it like a big fuzzy statement necklace—you can wear it in all the ways you would a statement necklace. Given its shorter length, you can easily wear a longer necklace with it, for a fun twist on a layered necklace. I’ve worn it a lot this season, but this outfit is my favorite way.

Rock Star Earrings: These are currently my favorite earrings! They are so much fun. I love the mix of natural stones and glamorous “gems” (made from glass), and I’m always a fan of gunmetal. With this mix, they work perfectly for an elegant, class look or an edgy, rock star look. You can dress them up or down, go tough or go pretty.  Like the edge and glamour they add to this particular outfit, but I’ve worn them with a lot of other stuff too.

Chelsea Charm Necklace: This has been my go-to necklace this season. Only recently did I begin wearing longer necklaces, and this one is a favorite. I love the mixed, vintage metals and sparkle. Since it has both gold and silver, it goes with other jewelry and a huge range of clothes. I love it with shorter necklaces, like a choker, or shorter scarves, like the Foxy Scarf. This works well as a casual necklace and great as part of an office look. My son adores the necklace too, as asks to wear it whenever he sees me in it.

Boots: These fuzzy boots are called Duluth, and it seems they sold out. This was my first pair of books in this casual, fuzzy, warm style, and I finally get why so many people love them. Luckily, JustFab has other “Fuzzies,” and some are only $10 right now!

Choker:  Lace Up by JustFab. This style seems to have also sold out. If you like something on JustFab, do buy it! Things go fast! They have some other good choices at good prices, such as Party of Three or Velvet and Lace. I am loving chokers right now, and this is a great way to try the style and not spend a fortune. New Year, Working the New You! My Personal Style Challenge for January

With the New Year, comes all of those New Year’s resolutions. We try to become better people with healthier habits and practices. But, we do not always work on our style. Here is an easy way to work on your style without the twelve month commitment of a New Year’s resolution!

Take part in my Personal Style Challenge for January. Think about how you want to grow and evolve your style. Perhaps you default to a few key pieces. Perhaps you only wear black. Maybe you want to kick things up a notch for work. Maybe you never wear scarves. Maybe you want to try a new trend. Think about what you want to change and Work It! Choose to work on that one area for the month of January. They say it takes 21 days to make a habit. So, you can conquer one of your resolutions in just one month, and start the New Year with a success!

 

 

 

 

My challenge:

I have only worn this dress for this photo shoot! Jace Embroidered Lace Dress by 41Hawthorn and from Stitch Fix.

Often I choose multiple things to work on. This month I’m going to focus on one, but one this one has parts. My closet is a mess, with a bunch of new purchases that I don’t have room for and old stuff that no longer fits my body, lifestyle, or style—much of it from before having a kid. I need to do a closest clean out. Related to the mess that is my closet, I have been wearing a few easy-to-reach items and not enjoying the extent of what I have. This tends to mean I grab the newer stuff, as it is the easiest to get to. So, old favorites are missed. But, I am also not wearing all of the new stuff either. Putting this together, my style challenge is to curate my wardrobe, focusing on these areas:

• Finally get to the closet cleaned out, removing things that no longer fit fits my body, lifestyle, or style
• Evaluate the garments that are not worn much by wearing them and seeing how they work for me now or, if I do not wear them or can’t make them work, remove them
• Get rid of the stuff that is not working, selling my quality clothes (from cabi, Stitch Fix, and more) and donating the rest
• Working on better methods of outfit management, such as trying the Stylebook app
• Wearing the clothes that are not getting worn, either because they are new or because they are older and lost in the chaos that is my closet.

My plan:

This outfit is a good example of my new style. But, I have only worn the sweater once besides this photo shoot! Fierro Elbow Patch Crew Neck Sweater by Brixon Ivy from Stitch Fix. The Scout pant from cabi. Wellie Rain Boots from L.L. Bean.

1. Take a day, possibly off from work (because it is hard to do anything with a toddler around), and pull everything from my closet and evaluate it
2. Create a donate pile and a sell pile
3. Take pictures of the items to sell and post them on the groups and possible do a closet clean-out group
4. Somehow mark or note the items I am keeping but don’t wear much
5. Put everything back that I am keeping, using my new closet organization items
6. Mange my wardrobe and outfits through the Stylebook app
7. War the unworn/little worn items and post the outfits online

Favorites from the Fall 2016 cabi collection—Get them while you can!

The fall cabi 2016 collection was one of the best I’ve seen. Unfortunately, they stop selling it today, December 31. So, while there is still time, let me share some of my favorite pieces from the collection!

Duchess Scarf, Skinny Cord and Lace-up Sweater

Duchess Scarf: This camel knit and faux fur scarf is probably my most worn piece of the season. It adds warmth and elegance to anything. I especially loved it in the fall when I wanted something seasonal, but it was too warm for a sweater or flannel. I love it over sleeveless or short sleeved tops, but it’s also fun over a sweater. It can dress up easily and be worn as a wrap. They also offer a teal one. This goes with so much! I love it all the ways shown here!

Medallion Reign Blouse: This is such a fun blouse. The print had a vintage feel, although my son thinks the medallions are tigers (they do look somewhat like tigers, especially to a three-year-old). It is in the same style as some favorites from previous seasons, and the shape flatters and hides. The print and ruffle give is a romantic and boy-meet-girl feel. You can easily rock with or jean or wear it under a jacket or cardigan for the office, church, or other occasions. It’s a seasonless piece, which I look forward to wearing often. I love it with the Skinny Cord or the Sigourney Skirt. It’s perfect under the Penny Blazer, Tartan Jacket, Reversible Wrap Sweater, or the Sweetheart Sweater.

Duchess Scarf, Skinny Cord and Lace-up Sweater

Skinny Cord: These are a very on-trend umber color that is a rich natural and will go with an amazing amount of things. I love my cabi skinny cords from this season and previous seasons. They fit wonderfully, and the stretch means they move. These cords pair well with much of the cabi season tops and sweater, or a variety of other brands. I was amazed by how often I reached for them and what they went with. A favorite outfit was combining this with the Jagger Blouse, Sweetheart Sweater, Duchess Scarf, and some Over-the-knee black boots—sexy, cute, and cozy!

Lace-up Sweater: A beautiful update to a classic sweater, with a lace-up back and pretty chiffon layer that shows through and an A-line shape that give it a loose flowy feel. It is very flattering, and emphasizes curves, while be cozy and pretty. I get compliments whenever I wear it.  It goes great with the Skinny Cord & Duchess Scarf, skinny jeans of various types. Also, try it with a pretty flowy top underneath in for double layers in back, such as the Cameo Top, Stevie Top, or the Zoe Top. See below for the back!

Penny Blazer: This classic, yet on-trendblazer looks like it is tweed, but it is ponte knit! It stretches and moves because of the ponte and is a lighter weight, perfect for warmer climate or year-round wear. The pockets have adorable bows and the cut is flattering. This is another great example of the boy-meets-girl trend. It’s perfect for the office, but also can be dressed down with some fun boots and destructed jeans. I love it with the Stevie, as shown, or the Medallion Reign Blouse. The jeans are a fun way to wear it, but feel free to dress it up for work with a pencil skirt, such as the Sigourney Skirt. Add a white button down for a classic look, a fun print blouse for a more modern look, or both with the It’s a Wrap Shirt.

Stevie Top: This cute Henley top is another perfect transitional piece. I wore this so much in our warm Georgia fall when I wanted an autumn feel while staying cool. The green is fun pop of color with the warm fall neutrals and makes it work just as well for spring! The bouquet print reminds me of the 70s, but in fun, contemporary way. This piece is perfect with so many of the cabi fall items. I love it with the Penny Blazer, as shown, and with the camel Sweetheart Sweater. The Duchess Scarf looks great with it. I think I have been wearing it the most with the Skinny Cord but love it also with the Dusk Destructed Skinny (as shown). The lovely Cameo Earrings (shown) are the perfect earrings both in color and style for this top.

Dusk Destructed Skinny: These jeans come in a regular style and a curvy style—which has more room in the hip and thigh and a higher rise for those of us with curves. The dark color is flattering and slimming. The destruction adds an edge to them, but is more subtle and unique with the black treads instead of the white we often see. They are soft jeans too—so cozy and comfortable. These have been my go-to jeans this season. As a dark skinny, you can rock them with anything. I love mixing the dressier or prettier items with them for some fun contrasts, such as the Penny Blazer, as shown, or the Lace-up Sweater. They also easily go sexy and edgy with items like the Jagger Blouse and Tartan jacket. Or go super casual with a sweatshirt and still look trendy!

Jagger Blouse, Tartan Jacket, and Dusk Destructed Skinny

Jagger Blouse: This blouse has it all. The tuxedo styling, pin tucks, and lace gives it a classic and Romantic feel. The black and unlined lace with a sleeveless styling, give it a sexy and tough feel. What more could you want? Wear it with a black cami for a more classic look, a bright colored cami for a trendy look, a nude cami for a sexy look, or no cami and a nude or black for a more risqué look. I have mostly worn this for dates, but it is perfect under a blazer for work or dressed up for a special occasion. For a tough yet feminine rocker look wear it with the Dusk Destructed Skinny. The Tartan Jacket can dress it up, or add even more of a rocker edge, depending on what else you are wearing. I love it with Sweetheart Sweater, Duchess Scarf, and Skinny Cord. Since this is sleeveless, it will work just as well for a hot summer night!

Tartan Jacket: I must confess, the Black Watch style plaids—with dark green and dark blue are a favorite of mine. And while this is not Black Watch, it is similar, and I love it. I also adore moto jackets. So a blue and green plaid moto jacket? There was no doubt I would adore this, and I do! Like many of the other pieces this season, it has a classic and edgy feel and can easily be worn either way. One of my favorite ways to wear this was with a past season skinny cord and a navy and white striped shirt, brown boots and the Duchess Scarf. You can improvise with this season’s Skinny Cord and Ernest Tee. It also rocks with the Dusk Destructed Skinny and Jagger Blouse. Or for a classic office look, wear it with a white blouse and pencil skirt.

Reversible Wrap Sweater, Wraparound Top, and Skinny Cord

Reversible Wrap Sweater: This versatile piece can be worn as a wrap or a loose open cardigan. Plus, it is reversible, so you can wear the blue or the slate/taupe color out. I’m wearing the blue color in this pictures, but the color of the stripes is the other color. This is a perfect layering piece. You can add it for some extra warmth. I wore it a lot in the fall over sleeveless blouse for a fall feel without too much warmth. But it is great now over turtlenecks and long sleeved tops. Whenever I wear it I get compliments. It can be worn to work or more casually. I love it with the Medallion Reign Blouse, but it also works over white, like the Wraparound Top. Either the Skinny Cord or the Dusk Destructed Skinny are great bottoms for this wrap. Or go super comfy and casual with the Spacedye M’leggings.

Wraparound Top: The sculpted draped top is elegant, classy, and easy to wear, as it just zips in the back. It can easily be dressed down, as shown, but is a perfect layer for the office or with other elegant pieces for a special occasion. Imagine it with some flowing black pants, classy heels, and pearls! For an elegant, yet easy office look, add the Sigourney Skirt and Darby Cardigan.

Sigourney Skirt, Sweetheart Sweater, and the Medallion Reign Blouse

Sigourney Skirt: Pencil skirts as classic pieces and wardrobe essentials. They are flattering to a variety of shapes, sizes, and heights.  I love that this one is turquoise—a fun color for such a classic pieces. And it has pockets for those pocket lovers! This is a great addition to your wardrobe regardless of whether you have several pencil skirts (like I do) or have none. Dress it down with a tee shirt, such as the Quinn Tee. Wear it to work with the Medallion Reign Blouse and Sweetheart Sweater (as shown), or the Darby Cardigan and Wraparound Top. So many of the seasons tops go with this, such as the Foulard and the Poppy. Or go for a sleek 60s-inspired look with the Odyssey Turtleneck. I will be featuring this skirt as a POW soon, so stay tuned!

Sweetheart Sweater: Last, but certainly not least is one of my favorite and most worn pieces from this season. This amazing long open sweater doesn’t require height to wear. The handkerchief hem, and fitted top do not overwhelm shorter people. And the styling is slimming, not boxy. It actually makes your backside look great. I’ve never found another long sweater that flatters my butt, but this does!  It comes in black or camel. Both are great, but I love the camel. Black longer sweaters are pretty common, so the camel is more eye-catching. It’s also such a rich, fun neutral. It goes with so much of the fall collection, such as the Medallion Reign Blouse, Stevie Top, and Jagger Blouse. I wore it as a cozy layer instead or threw it on as a jacket when running errands. I love it with skirts (as shown here with the Sigourney Skirt) or skinnys, such as the Skinny Cord or the Dusk Destructed Skinny. If you get one long sweater, get this one!

Cameo Earrings and Pyramid Necklace with the Stevie Top

As you can tell, I loved the cabi Fall 2106 collection. There are several other pieces that could have made this list, but I ran out of time. Let me give you two more honorable mentions—the Foxy Scarf and LBD Edie Dress, which are both part of the Holiday Charms limited edition. I plan to rock these this NYE—like this! I did not include the Beyond Tee, because I just featured it as the POW and you can see it styles seven different ways with lots of variations. Do not forget the jewelry, which is great! I love the Chelsea Charm Necklace, the Rock Star Earrings, Cameo Earrings, the Pyramid Necklace, and the Zelda Necklace.

Stitch Fix Review: Houndstooth & Elephants, Oh My Fix Four

My wardrobe is pretty much cabi. As I have said before, I don’t really like shopping. I have a hard time finding stuff that fits and I like. Plus, it takes so much time! So, cabi was a perfect fit and literally often a perfect fit. And while I adore cabi, it means my wardrobe is limited by being mostly a single brand. Stitch Fix may be my perfect solution to that. I don’t have to shop. I don’t have to waste time driving to the mall or store or boutiques. I fill out a style profile, I tell my stylish what I want, and each month a box arrives with a variety of brands that my stylist thought worked for me and my requests. It’s wonderful. The clothes fit perfectly into my wardrobe and lifestyle. Now my wardrobe is a mix of cabi and Stitch Fix. I find myself reaching for some of my favorite Stitch Fix pieces time and again. They mix beautifully with cabi and add a depth to my wardrobe and style!  

But, sometimes the clothes are not me or don’t fit. Not all Fixes are perfect. But so far, I have loved at least two items from the Fix. Let’s see how this next Fix works!

About Stitch Fix

For those who are unfamiliar, Stitch Fix is a personal styling service. You fill out a profile, provide links to your social media and perhaps a Board on Pinterest of your style and things you like, and you get a box of five items shipped to you. You set the price point for the box and the frequency of the boxes. Stitch Fix hooks you up with a personal stylist, who sends a note and styling suggestions each time. You can leave the stylist a note before she prepares your box, letting her know your clothing needs, plans, and so on that may impact her choices. You can get clothing and shoes (and perhaps jewelry and other accessories, but I have only gotten shoes and clothes so far). There is a $20 styling fee, but this is taken off anything you purchase. Also, if you purchase all five items you get a 25% discount.

I think the interface just doesn’t match my flow (I say as someone who does research on the user experience with interfaces, so I may not be just making this up).

My Style Profile and Requests

My default pricing is $50-100 per item (it can be adjusted based on type, but I keep it the same), but I moved my price range down to “the cheaper the better” for several areas. I said I wanted more sneakers, since I loved the ones last time, or some nice fall boots. I expressed general interest in fall clothes.

1)      41HAWTHORN Colibri Solid Tab Sleeve Blouse:

I love navy and dark blue colors and have been trying to get more of them, because they go well with my eyes. This is a great color. It’s a ¾ length sleeve blouse in a semi sheer polyester. It buttons part of the way down, and has some nice gathering at the shoulders. The band color is nice, and the sleeves can roll up. This would be a good summer work blouse, light and cool, yet appropriately professional. The fit is somewhat loose/baggy but fairly flattering. It will work well casually, over skinny jeans or even leggings. It’s a nice blouse, with some nice features, but is not particularly special. I think I would wear it, but I’m not sure if I would wear it enough. I have a lot of nice blouses in my closet.

2)      SeaVees Monterey Houndstooth Lace-Up Sneakers: I love these! The houndstooth print is so much fun! But, they are $98! I don’t tend to spend that much on any footwear other than really nice boots. Also, I think I am an 8.75 in SeaVees, neither the 8.5 or the 9s fit as well as I would like. I find the shoes less comfortable than I would like for sneakers—possibly because of sizing. But, so cute! So fun! Perfect for chasing the toddler around the park or dressing down a fancy skirt.

Cost: $98.00

Verdict: Would be a yes, if not for cost—undecided

MARKET & SPRUCE Dollie Tie Back Neck Knit Top, SeaVees Monterey Houndstooth Lace-Up Sneakers, and LIVERPOOL Elizabeth Super Skinny Jean.

3)      MARKET & SPRUCE Dollie Tie Back Neck Knit Top: This is very soft and cozy. I love the baggy drapes. I also adore the tie back neck. The grosgrain ribbon bow adds a touch of whimsy and pretty to a casual sweater/sweatshirt.  The keyhole in back adds a bra-friendly flash of skin and makes the top even more fun. This is great over leggings when you want to feel like you are wearing PJs. It would look great with the khaki, olive, and army green that are all the rage. This is also very on-trend with the cute loungewear trend. I hope this works with the Spacedye M’legging and the Trek Jogger for stylist comfort!

Cost: $54.00

Verdict: Keeping!

PIXLEY Ellie Printed 3/4 Sleeve Blouse, SeaVees Monterey Houndstooth Lace-Up Sneakers, and LIVERPOOL Elizabeth Super Skinny Jean.

4)      PIXLEY Ellie Printed 3/4 Sleeve Blouse: My initial reaction, shown in the video, is “meh” about an elephant print. I know my toddler would love it, but it’s a bit out there for me. I also have some cute print blouses in my comfort zone that don’t get worn enough. The print is beige and black, making it less crazy than it could be, which helps. It’s also a semi sheer polyester, so it breathes easily and work well for work. The ¾ length sleeves are fixed and cannot be rolled up or down.  I do like it on me. It can be dressed down or up easily. It would be cute under a blazer or over leggings. The name is cute.

Cost: $48.00

Verdict: undecided, but do like it more than I thought

5)      LIVERPOOL Elizabeth Super Skinny Jean: I have a lot of great cabi jeans, and have requested to not get jeans. These are really more like leggings, with the band-style leggings waist, and sewn on front pockets and “zipper area” (real back pockets). They are very comfortable, and the band will probably work better with my belly (although it does show through some of the tops). It is oddly baggy at the bottom—maybe they are too long? A dark skinny jean/legging can easily be dressed up for a date and down with a sweater or tunic. Depending on your workplace, you could even wear them to work. Of course, they will look great with boots. This nice dark color makes them more versatile, allowing them to be dressed up more. I can see reaching for these when I want the comfort of leggings and the look of jeans. Or when I am bloated.

Cost: $78.00

Verdict: Undecided but leaning yes

Final Verdict

This Fix grew on me. I loved the sneakers and the tie back top at first. But, the other pieces went from “meh” to more and more me. I realized the jean leggings were very comfortable and versatile. The waist was perfect for weight gain (stupid medication), but would also work when I took some of the weight off. I really wanted the sneakers, but the price… However, if I bought the whole fix, I got the sneakers pretty much “free” as they were close to the same amount of my 25% discounts. And I liked the shirts. The more I tried Ellie the more the elephant print grew on me. The Colibri blue top was also very versatile and such a great color. Soon, I have convinced myself to keep all of it (exchanging the sneakers for a 9). I’m very happy I did! I’ve worn all of the pieces. The sneakers are great. I adore styling the Colibri blue top, and even had fun with Ellie. The jeans have become a staple. I wore them a lot recovering from my sinus survey and since then when I want comfort and style. I can’t wait to rock them with some over-the-knee boots this fall. So, while I was not convinced at first, this was a great Fix and a welcome addition to my wardrobe. It just goes to show, you should always try on, always evaluate the place of a piece in your wardrobe, and always try styling it. Then you will know if it really works for you or not.

What is holding back your style? My Personal October Style Challenge

We all have our style challenges. Perhaps we lack confidence to try a style we love. Maybe we only wear blue. Perhaps we have never tried red lipstick. Maybe we tend to only wear our hair in a ponytail. Maybe we love over-the-knee boots, but just have not tried them. Whatever your challenge, and whatever your reason, here in as opportunity to grow.

I tried this idea before, in February, and plan to make it a monthly thing. I have many personal style challenges to work on. This way I can master one or two a month!

 

 

 

My challenges:

For October I have two Personal Style Challenges:

• Rings: I have rings, but besides my wedding and engagement rings, I tend to not wear them. So, I am challenging myself wear rings more in October!
• Scarves: I adore scarves. They are fun. They are a great way to add a pop of color or print to an outfit. They keep my neck warm. I have a ton of scarves. I do not wear scarves very often thought. So, I challenge myself to wear more scarves in October—which really is a great month to do so!

My plan:

My plan for both is simple: wear more of them. I have been working for months to add more rings to my collection, and I have several wonderful ones from Solid Treasures and a fun one from Shine Chaser Jewelry. I also recently joined Le Tote (more of this later), and will rent me some rings and scarves to help out.

I may report back and post pictures. I’ll certainly be talking about this on Instagram, so follow me there for more!

Stitch Fix Review: Diamonds, Sailboats, and Sneakers Fix Three

As discussed in my last (and first) Stitch Fix review, I joined Stitch Fix recently, thanks to an Instagram friend and fellow cabi addict, Jenni. Stitch Fix is a subscription-based  personal styling service.  For more on how Stitch Fix works, do check out my first review. After two good Fixes, I decided to keep on going with my subscription. I continue to love Stitch Fix and look forward to the delivery of each box!

Keeping with “tradition,” I figured I would review for you my third Fix! My style profile and requests stayed nearly the same, although I did make two requests unique to the fix:

1. I asked for comfortable shoes to run around in
2. I asked for bra-friendly sleeveless tops

The first, because I did not have decent options and had been looking for a while. I want cute and comfy. The second because I have a lot of sleeveless tops that do not have bra-friendly straps and I can only wear a strapless bra so many days week before we all suffer (me and anyone around me). I need more I can wear a normal bra with!

Kedavra Colorblock Cami Blouse, Leena Printed Skirt, Monterey Lace-up Sneakers all from my Stitch Fix, along with older Stella & Dot earrings.

1. Kedavra Colorblock Cami Blouse by 41Hawthron: First, is this bra-friendly? No. I’d need to wear a strapless or have the strap show. I love the soft black (or navy?) mixed with lavender and light pink—it gives it a vintage feel. The waist and draping are flattering, covering my tummy and complimenting my chest. It’s a light cool fabric and would be good for work under a jacket or cardigan or for a date with a cute pair of jeans or pencil skirt. The problem is, I have a lot of tops that fill this niche in my closet. This is the type of top cabi specializes in. I like it, but don’t love it, and I don’t need it. Especially not for near sixty dollars. Now, if it had wider straps and I could have worn a bra with it, I would have probably gotten it. Honestly, asking for bra-friendly and getting this was enough of a disappointment that I was less inclined to purchase it.

Cost: $58.00

Verdict: Did not purchase

2. Tammi Print Dress by 41Hawthron: Better, but still not bra-friendly (I might be able to wear a racer-back, but highly bra dependent). So, disappointment there. This dress was a bit of a surprise on. The print was not really me—nautical I love, but often less literally. And the orange made it seem… cutesy rather than cute. But I did like the dress on. The cut was fairly flattering, and the fabric soft. I loved the side waist tie—fun and different. But, I’m not sure where I would wear this. My sundresses don’t get worn enough. I have other dresses that work better for work. And, while I liked it, I didn’t love it. Even my husband thought it cute, but limited in use.

Cost: $68.00

Verdict: Did not purchase

3. Leena Printed Skirt by Renee C: This was an instant love! My concern unboxing it was fit. Pencil skirts and my hips do not always agree (but when they do! Bliss!). But it fit! The fabric is a very stretchy knit. I love the below-knee length—it looks a bit classier and sleeker this way. I love the diamond print. It looks 60s to me, without going overboard. This skirt easily dresses up or down (as you will see later). It’s perfect for work or a date. It’s also great with some sneakers and a fun tee. My wardrobe needed this skirt and I didn’t even know it! (I wore this in all pictures except the dress one)

Cost: $54.00

Verdict: Purchased!

4.  Visperas Crochet Back Top by Skies are Blue: The back of this top is fabulous! The crochet is so pretty and flattering. But look! It’s not bra-friendly! This is three for three. Such a disappointment. I loved the pretty crochet with the small triangle print—nice contract. But the fit of the top was not great. My chest was too big and pulling to top oddly. Plus it did not flow over the belly as much as I would like. And this has the same problem as Kedavra top. My closet is full of these types of top (not with the crochet back, of course). I will buy more, but they have to fit well and be special enough to kick some of the others out of my closet. (top in both pictures in this group)

5. Monterey Lace-up Sneakers by SeaVees: These are just what I asked for—practical comfy shoes I can run around in. And I love the “light purple” color (what they called it; I might go for “dusky lavender”). It’s a kick of fun, but in a near neutral that will go with so much. I adore them with the Leena skirt to dress it down. I actually had ordered some Converse in a similar, but less neutral, lavender, but they did not fit. It’s like the stylist knew just what I wanted here! Perfect for me and my wardrobe! You can see these also in some of the other pictures--I wore them with each outfit, except the dress.

Cost: $68.00

Verdict: Kept (although I exchanged them for a size up)

In addition, I said I was currently between a medium and large and may need to size up if it buttons (due to the girls) or is clingy. My default shirt size is a medium.

Unboxing

Interested in my initial reactions? I made a video of the unboxing (disclaimer: I’ve only ever done one other video and I used my laptop, so it is not high quality). It’s casual and you get to hear my voice and learn more about me.

The Five Items

I received three tops, one pair of shoes, and one pair of shorts. I’m posting an initial review and will later post (or update this post) with my decisions.

1. Cindie Printed Linen Short by Level 99: I love these shorts. The print is fun. The fabric is amazing. It is a made of Tencel a “new age fiber” made from wood! It’s an amazingly soft linen-like fabric. I don’t think it will wrinkle as much though. My stylist, Jaime, saw I pinned some yellow to my board, so she added these. I’m not a huge yellow person, but the amount in this is just fine. The short will go well with some of my cabi spring pieces, such as the Gemma Top and Sleeveless Swing Tee. The shorts are a bit lose around the waist, but stay up. This honestly may make them even more comfortable. They are a bit shorter than I like, as my legs are not what they use dot be, but I can work with this length. These are great shorts for play and casual wear. I see playground trips in their future! Cost: $78.00.
2. Jorgenseon Crochet Top by Daniel Rainn: This is a pretty white lace top with a liner. I’m undecided on this piece. I already have the Needle Lace Shell from cabi Spring 2014 and I’m not sure if I need another white lace top. Plus, as I mentioned in the video, white does not go well with being a toddler mom. It has a cute tuck in the front of the neckline and drapes nicely voer my problem areas (for the most part). I love how the lining stops short, leaving a lace edge. I do love it with the short, which my stylist suggested (shown together). This would be a fun beach outfit. This top will easily dress up or down, and would work for work. Cost: $68.00. 
3. Davina Metallic Thong Sandal by Dolce Vita: Thong! That is what it is called. I had no clue in the video. But now I think I just blanked and forget. I am to a fan of thongs. I don’t find them comfortable between my toes (more on this in the video), and these are not exception. I’m also not sure of yellow shoes, but I do love my orange Newport flats and wear them more than I would imagine. Also, I love the gold accents. The shorts, lace top, and these shoes are a great outfit. However, the shoes are slippery, both my foot on the foot bed, and the sole on the ground. As a toddler mom, I cannot be slipping and sliding everywhere (anyone know why some shoes have that fuzzy fabric on the bottom now? My kid’s shoes do this. The last thing toddler needs is slippery shoes!). I want these shoes to work for me. But I don’t think they do. Cost: $39.99.

4. Castillo Embroidered Trim Detail Top by Skies are Blue: I nicknamed this top in my pictures “That 70s Top” because it reminds me of what people wore in the 70s. Granted, it is updated. But the embroidered yoke just brings me back to my childhood. I liked this top better on that I thought. It’s a nice gauzy fabric and the trim is fun. However, it is clingy to the girls and a bit to the belly. The arms also look (but do not feel) a bit tight. I think I need to size up. Overall: cute, fun, summery, seventies style, but not me and not very flattering on me. This looks great with jeans and could be cute shorts. Cost: $54.00

5.       Lonni Crochet Back Knit Tank by Papermoon: Just recently I was thinking I wanted a bra-friendly flowy top that I could throw on. And look! This is just the thing. I love the turquoise color with the antique white (color) crocheted trip on the bottom hem and work on the back. This is fun, practical, and has a modern, pretty vibe. It will easily fit into my wardrobe (which tells you that I plan to keep it). This is a dressy casual shirt, perfect for play, fun, dates, and more. Cost: $38.00.

Three Tips for Fabulous Fourth Style: Tip Three—Find one versatile new piece and mix it with red, white, and blue you already own

For better or worse, the Fourth of July only comes once a year. You can style a few more patriotic days if you want, such as Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day (and Bastille Day, if you want to get your French on). But, most of the rest of the year, red, white, and blue just may be too much, especially items that are clearly for the Fourth. Thus, buying specific clothes for the holiday may not be an effective use of your money or closet space. Instead, start with a new piece that you can also wear other days of the year. Bonus points if it suggests the Fourth of July, such as stars in red, white, and/or blue, but doesn’t scream it, so you can wear them the rest of the season too. Then add red, white, and blue pieces you already own for a practical, closet-, and budget-friendly look!  Not sure what to get? Tips for making it work:

This skirt is perfect for the Fourth but it also can work for work, church, special occasions, and more! Outfit: PLEATED STAR SKIRT, SLEEVELESS DOUBLE DRAPE TEE, AND BOW BALLET FLATS.

• If you find your closet lacking either, go for stripes or stars for your new pieces—there are lots of options that easily work for everyday wear (my favorite may be this lovely skirt)
• Look for new pieces you can clearly see yourself wearing to best ensure you do
• If you add a new red item, you could possibly rock it for other “red” holidays, such as Christmas and Valentine’s day (a red dress a red or a top you can layer might be best for this) (this idea could also work for blue for Hanukkah…), making it even more versatile
• Keep in mind how you are celebrating the Fourth, while I love this skirt or this jacket, neither will work for my plans to be outside in the hot Georgia weather walking around a festival and having a casual picnic before watching fireworks (although I wore them to work around the Fourth for a patriotic touch)
• Look for fun pieces, such as red shiny wedges, as star scarf, or dangling star earrings for a celebratory touch
• Feel free to go overboard if you are adding anew accessory, as they can easily be styled “down” the rest of the year (Such as this blue and red star scarf—clearly has a Fourth of July vibe, but could also work with a navy suit)
• Shop your closet for the rest of the outfit, focusing on red, white, and blue items
• When putting together the outfit consider these previous tips:
  • Wear two of the colors, pop one
  • Mix prints, especially stars and stripes

Three Tips for Fabulous Fourth Style: Tip Two—Mix Prints for a more Festive Look!

For a fun and festival Fourth of July look, mix prints in red, white, and blue. This will be a more unexpected look, especially if you choose prints that are not something clearly "Fourth of July prints"—like an American flag print. Bonus points if you can mix a strip with a star print!

Tips for making it work:

Three prints, including a star print and stripe print. Outfit: Striped Favorite Tank, Picnic Short, Star Print Scarf, and the Bow Ballet Flats

• Make one of your prints stripes for more clear reference to Independence Day
• Consider mixing a stripes print and a star print, if you have them, for a fun play on the American flag (and this mixes two of the same types of prints [geometric], which is a win for print mixing)
• For the Fourth, you can have a lot of fun mixing prints in the three colors, which automatically gives you a limited palette and the opportunity to go bigger and bolder than normal
• Follow the rule for mixing prints so the outfit works together, especially these:
  • It may be easier to mix prints if you choose one main color that is in each of the prints to bring the outfit together (white may be easiest and is used in my examples)
  • For a more complicated mix, try prints with different main color (such as red, white, and blue) [These last two conflict, but either can work, so go with what best fits your style and experience with mixing prints]
  • If mixing prints in the same color, emphasize differences in size, fabric, and style of print
  • Play with size, mixing smaller prints with larger prints
  • Look for different fabrics and structure, such as a loose knit and a structured cotton
  • Consider stripes a neutral when mixing prints
• Have fun—it’s the Fourth you can go a bit wild and not be the craziest dressed person

Three Tips for Fabulous Fourth Style: Tip One--Wear Two & Pop One

For a classier, and more subtle take on  patriotic style , choose two of the three flag colors, such as blue and white, and base your outfit around them. Then choose one or two key elements (probably accessories) to pop the third color—red (or whatever is left).

Tips for making it work:

Outfit: PLEATED STAR SKIRT, SLEEVELESS DOUBLE DRAPE TEE, AND BOW BALLET FLATS.

• Think scarves, shoes, bags, and statement jewelry to pop your third color or wear a print that has some of that third color in it
• Limit the amount of the pop color to one or two pieces to make it really work
• Consider mixing prints in the two main colors of your outfit for added fun
• Take it even further and wear a dress, jumpsuit, or outfit in one color and then accessories in the other two
• Don’t be afraid of having blue and red as your two main colors—if you can do it more power to you!
• Have fun—it’s the Fourth you can go a bit wild and not be the most crazily dressed person

Not just for fireworks: Nine Versatile Pieces for your Fourth of July and Patriotic Wardrobe

The Fourth of July is quickly approaching and many of us may be thinking about what we are going to wear.  Here are nine pieces you can buy now for a great Fourth of July look that will also work in your general wardrobe. A few of these I regularly wear to work!

Kris Top, Picnic Short, Star Print Scarf, and the Bow Ballet Flats

1.  Kris Top: This cabi spring 2016 on-trend cropped (but not too short) top, has a crossover asymmetrical hem. It is a light navy knit—perfect for hot summer celebrations. Consider rocking it with some red shorts (such as the Picnic Short) and patriotic accessories (such as this Star Print Scarf!).  Or pair it with a pretty skirt!

2. Star Print Scarf: This festive and fun scarf has blue stars with pops of red ones. It works wonderfully for the Fourth, but can add a fun touch to any outfit year round. It pairs wonderfully with the picnic shorts and either the Kris Top or Striped Favorite Tank. It would also be fabulous over a red dress, blue dress, or white dress for a pop of patriotic.

3. Picnic Short: These cute cabi spring 2016 shorts have red, purple, and pink in them. With some blue or white they are perfect for the Fourth or other patriotic holidays, but always work perfectly with summer tops and tees. The subtle print mixes easily with stripes and other patterns.

4.  Striped Favorite Tank: This easy, casual tank by Merona at Target, is a great piece for a casual Fourth of July look. I love it with the patterns for the Picnic Short and Star Print Scarf for fun,  patriotic pattern play. You could also wear with white, denim blue, or red shorts. Or dress it ups with a fun skirt for the Fourth.

5.  Pleated Star Skirt: I love this skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End! It is so pretty, fun, and feminine. I also love stars and am delighted to find them on a work-friendly skirt! This skirt is perfect for a dressier Fourth of July celebration. It works well with the Sleeveless Double Drape Tee for this. Or dress it down with a tee and some causal shoes.  This is even on sale right now. Stay tuned for more on this skirt.

6.  Sleeveless Double Drape Tee: This is another cabi spring 2016 garment. It is an incredibly flattering tee that will add some “va va voom” to your fireworks. It dress up nicely, as shown with the Pleated Star Skirt. But you can rock with jeans, shorts, or whatever. It’s cute with the Picnic Short too!

7. Bow Ballet Flats: These timeless flats can add a pop of red (or blue) to your patriotic outfit, and also work every day. They are cute and comfortable. They work well with shorts, jeans, or a skirt. I love them with a mostly blue and white outfit, for a burst of red. I do suggest sizing up a half a size.

8. Butterfly Print Scarf: This pretty summery scarf by ITB Design can add blue and flow to your Fourth of July outfit. It’s large and works well as a warp when the temperature drop as you wait for fireworks. It can also be worn around the neck during the day, as I have shown with the Star Print Scarf. The butterfly deign works wonderfully for spring and summer. Consider wearing it over a red dress for a fun and unexpected Fourth look.

9. Cruise Jacket: This classic, high-end styled jacket is also one of my favorite cabi pieces of the Spring 2016 season. It easily works for a dressy Fourth of July look, but can also be a fun addition to a casual outfit, as I style it here. Consider rocking it with ripped jeans; linen pants in your favorite patriotic color; a navy pencil skirt; a red dress; or with a casual tee shirt, cut-off shorts, and a ball cap! I love rocking it casually. This nautical piece works wonderfully for the office or special occasion too—not just for fireworks!

My Favorite 10 (11? 13?) cabi Spring 2016 Pieces

Anyone who has spent any time on this blog or my Instagram feed or who has met me knows I am big cabi fan. In fact, it is due in part to my great experiences with cabi that I started this blog. Now the first season of cabi since the blog started, Spring 2016, is coming to a close. So, I thought I’d share my ten favorite (plus some extra) pieces from the collection, most of which you have seen here.

What are your favorites?

1.       Traveler Pants: While I did not feature these in a POW (Piece of the Week), I did feature them as one of the seven transitional pieces you need now and they were part of a POW outfit with the Plume Top. These pants are amazing! They are so soft and comfortable! I lived in them this spring (just check out my Instagram feed!). I love that they are very on-trend (Jennifer Aniston has a pair just like them) and have a rough, practical military feel. I knew they weather travel with a toddler quite well (which is as close as I ever hope to get to a war zone).  The have a slight crop and can easily be rolled up for more of a cropped look and/or to show off those cute heels or sandals. The elasticized ankle cuff, reminiscent of some track pants, gives them a sporty feel. The fit is slim, so they are a comfortable fit that is not skinny or baggy. They are made from a cotton spandex sateen that feels great on but has a certain ruggedness. I ended up buying second pair, because I was wearing them so much! Shopping tip: Size down one to two sizes below your normal cabi pants size. I normally wear an 8 (style dependent), but got these in both a six and four and the four is the better fit (and I need to unbutton them to get them off). I ADORE THESE PANTS!

2. Verde Jacket: I’ve also not focused on this jacket much here. I considered it for a POW, but ran out of time. However, I did style it with the Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans (“Destructed White: It’s Terrific Being Green Thursday”). This bright “jelly bean green” color is striking and unexpected. I get compliments every time I wear it! The jacket had a vintage, feminine feel to it, with adorable box details on the pockets (which are not overly girly in implementation). It has a very flattering cut with a peplum waist—clearly highlighting/creating your hourglass shape, and hiding that extra you may have around your waist. This jacket can easily be dressed up or down. So far, I’ve mostly worn it for work, as it makes a light, professional layer. I must admit, part of my love of this jacket is how good the color looks on me. This is not a color that with work as well for everyone—but certainly is something many a redhead can rock (and many others too).

3. Margherita Dress: Yes, we have here a POW! This fun, easy, breezy sundress was my eight POW. As I show, it is very versatile and can work for office, play, dressing up, or whatever! You can buy it in two prints, this navy and white print version or a prism pattern. One of the best things about this sundress is the pockets! It is a longer length—not quite maxi—with an asymmetrical hem. It is a light and cool viscose fabric. It moves and blows easily in the breeze. Check out the POW for more!

4. Cruise Jacket: This classic, high-end styled jacket was featured in my “Go-To POW: Working It Classic Nautical Wednesday” and you will see it again soon! This is an amazing piece with great details, like the gold and email buttons. It is a “Love, Carol” piece, which is a special sub collection of higher-end pieces designed by Carol Anderson (the CA in cabi). It has a nautical feel to it with navy, cream, and red stripes. The fabric is a very soft woven fabric that is light and cool. It is a tailored jacket that creates fine lines. The jacket works well for work (I’ve worn it a few times), but can also be dressed down with some destructed jeans for a fun, casual look. This piece is really special.

5. Go-To Trouser: This is another POW and during that POW I really fell in love with them. At first glance, they may seem to just be black trousers. But looking closely, you will see they are a shorter style pants (“ankle skimming”). They are a light, but sturdy, blend of cotton, modal, and spandex, which means they move and stretch wonderfully. Which also means, they are very comfortable. The shorter length allows you to really show off some fun shoes. While perfect for work (especially on hot summer days), they can easily for nearly any occasion, as I show in the POW.  I highly recommend these wardrobe essentials! I could go on forever about them, but why don’t you check out the POW?

6. Bardot Shirt: Yes, we have another POW—the lovely, boho & boutique vibe Bardot Shirt. This shirt turned me from not liking denim shirts on me to loving them. I’ve even bough another since. The navy embroidery gives it a boutique and Southwestern feel, which is a fun combination! It works well as a cover up or layer, along with as a blouse. It can easily be dressed up for work, special occasions, and dates. The faded blue makes it an easy choice for the denim-on-denim trend, as it will likely be a different color then the other denim pieces you are wearing together.

7. Lido Skirt: You cannot go wrong with a navy ponte pencil skirt. I’ve talked about how ponte is the perfect work fabric. I’ve also suggested ponte knit pencil skirt is a must. Plus, navy is a fabulous new neutral and power color. Combined, you have the perfect skirt! I did not feature the Lido Skirt as a POW, but did post about is a transitional piece you need now and styled it in the Fall into Spring outfit. Pencil skirts are flattering and can work on many different body types. I love them for work. This one has a few cool features. First, it has pockets! And it also have a tiered hem for a subtle touch of style.

8. Sleeveless Double Drape Tee: This is an incredibly flattering top. The draping gives you curves if you don’t have them and it flatters what you do have (even hiding if you have a bit extra).  I styled this in the Michelle POW: Working It Navy Power Wednesday if you want to see how great it is for work. It also can be worn casually and really would help you rock a date. I know women from XS to XL who love this top! Plus, it is navy!

9.  Destructed Slim Boyfriend: These white jeans are my current POW. They are an amazingly soft denim in a vintage white. They have striking contrast trim, for a special touch. The slim boyfriend shape is flattering and comfortable. The destruction (rips) add an edge and can be a fun element, especially in otherwise fancy outfits. They roll up nicely, to show off fun heels or sandals. For an on-trend white jean, it doesn’t get my better!

10.   Multiple sleeveless tops: I can’t decide. So, I’m cheating a bit here. There are several nice sleeveless tops in the collection this season, and I couldn’t just pick one. They all have very different features and style. So, among my favorites, you can pick yours:

a. Luisa Tank: This bright floral, racer-back style tank is cheerful and fun. I didn’t really like it until I tried it on and then it became a must have! It works great for work, play, dressy, or casual. See it styles for work in “Run Around POW: Elegant Layers and Brights Manic Monday.”

b. Bella Top: This graceful, feminine beauty looks great on. The flowing, ruffled layer under the straight layer, gives it a unique look. The soft floral has a mix of colors, so this top can go with a lot. The merrowed edges give it a modern touch. I did not style it on the blog yet. But, expect to see it on Instagram a lot this summer! It goes well with a lot, but I love it with denim cut-offs.

c. Tivoli Top: In contrast to bright or feminine, we have this fierce black, ivory, and taupe animal print top. It have wonderful touches like lacy mesh and a keyhole closure.  Its wonder for work (especially with the Go-To Trouser), but works for dates or anything. I’ve styled it for work and with one on-trend bright jeans and a fall black jacket.

11.   Martini Top: This is my “honorable mention” as it deserves to be on the list. This navy print blouse (with whiter and green “olives”), has a swingy relaxed fit in a button-down style. It has a bit of a 60s feel to it. It has ¾ length sleeves for a cool summer look. While it can be styled down, I find it perfect for work. I styled it on the blog in a few different ways, including Run Around POW: Off to the Races Saturday and Michelle POW: Analogous Color Fun Saturday.

I really did love this season of cabi, and it was hard to choose just ten, or eleven, or I guess 13 favorite pieces! Which are your favorites?

Fall into Spring (or Summer) 5 & 6: Bring Your Fall Blouses Forward into Spring and Summer!

This is part five and six of my Fall into Spring adventure (see below for a list of the previous four). I’m highlighting six great pieces from the cabi Fall collection that you may have in your wardrobe and showing how you can wear them with the spring cabi collection or your own spring pieces. If you don’t have these pieces or if you are not a cabi fan, I’ll discuss how you can take similar pieces and rock the more traditional fall pieces this spring and summer!

Since the fifth and sixth pieces have much and common, and because it is now summer, I am combining them into a single post. Most of the tips can be applied to either. The fifth piece may look familiar, as this lovely pieces was our second POW, the Love Blouse! This is a pretty, longer-length sleeveless blouse with a gathered collar. It’s a great year-round piece, as I will show. Another great year-round piece, is another sleeveless fall blouse—the Stained Glass Blouse. This blouse has over twenty different colors in it, and is a striking, artistic blouse that goes with anything. The bolder, darker colors may see more fall-like, but they can work perfectly for the spring and summer. If you do not own either of these cabi blouses from Fall 2015, look in your closet for other colorful, sleeveless fall blouses (or really any colorful sleeveless blouses). Or, you can consider spring blouses instead, such as the Bella Top, the Blossom Top (which will work well in the fall too—another year-round option!), the Gelato Top, or the Vita Blouse.

Tips:

• Make your fall blouses more spring or summery by mixing them with bright warm weather colors like citron and bougainvillea
• Add spring layers, such as shrugs and cardigans, over the fall blouse to help bring them forward
• Since they are sleeveless, consider wearing the blouses without layers and with shorts or skirts for a quick warm-weather look
• Wear the blouses with the classic summer neutral, navy, for instance summer appeal (consider the Mariner Trouser, Capote Trouser, Michelle Cardigan, Lido Jacket, and Lido Skirt)
• Add summer accessories and shoes, like off-white sandals, for a summer feel
• Combine the fall blouses with spring fabrics, like chiffon and linen, to aid a spring air
• Wear the blouses more casually, as summer and spring have a more casual feel
• Consider lighter layers, such as ones with three-quarter sleeves (or rolled up) or thinner fabrics to enhance the summer vibe
• Wear button-up fall blouses, such as the Love Blouse, unbuttoned over tanks, camis, sundresses, and even swimsuits for a fall twist on a summer layer
• Rock the blouses with some of the spring trends to give it a fresh feel—such as the Traveler Pant

Bardot POW: Working It Wrapped, Classy Linen & Denim Wednesday

Outfit Mission Statement: Make your denim shirt work for work by pairing it with a classic neutral linen trouser and sophisticated accessories

Working it Wednesday outfits are professional career clothes, often a step or two above Manic Monday outfits. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt. Of course, the easy way to dress up a denim shirt for the boardroom would be to add it to a two piece suit, or wear a blazer, or do any number of rather predictable, but interesting, things. However, for a lovely denim shirt with special details, like this one, you don’t need to go the easy way. Simply add professional, quality pieces that say class and sophistication, and you can make it work!

Tips:

• Dress up your denim shirt for work by pairing it with a nice, professional pair of linen trousers in a neutral
• Add classy accessories and shoes to add sophistication and professionalism
• Consider mixing lighter neutrals for a cultured look, such as cream, beige, burnished gold, and leopard print
• A fine quality leopard print belt can add class to a work look (but be careful of going overboard, leopard can get trashy is there is too much or the quality is poor)
• Just because it is a button-down, it does not mean you need to button it all the way down!  Consider a diagonal wrap instead (see directions below)
• Want more sophistication? Add a designer handbag
• Consider a nice crisp cream linen, for a more refined look
• Tuck in your shirt for a dressier look

Directions for Wrap Tuck:

• Start with a denim shirt that is baggy on you (a size up)
• Button the buttons down to your bust or a bit lower (more or less depending on the amount you want to wrap)
• With your pants undone, take the shirttail of the piece that is on top (has the button holes), and wrap around you, creating a diagonal line
• With a safety pin, pin the shirttail into this diagonal shape, making sure the pin stays below where the pants will tuck (if needed add more above the tuck line, just find ways to do it invisibly)
• Tuck in your shirt, making sure to keep the diagonal
• Add a belt for additional waist slimming attention
