Beyond POW: Trendy Layers and a New Basic Tuesday

Outfit Mission Statement: Go beyond your tee and jeans with a unique tunic tee and trendy layers

No place like Tuesday outfits are casual, comfy clothes for working from home, working at home, parenting (at home), and anything else where comfort is key and you are home. Although they will work for errands and anything else casual. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Beyond Tee from cabi Fall 2016. In this outfit we see the Beyond Tee in its most basic form—with no extra styling of the panels. This is what it looks like—tunic length tee with two longer panels. It works perfectly in a casual, comfortable, yet stylish outfit. If you are a tee-and-leggings type of person, here is your stylish and funky version of it. You can add a warm layer, like the amazing Sweetheart Sweater, shown in some of the pictures. I love the mix of lengths with long sweater, long tee panels, and the tunic length tee underneath. Such fun! This is perfect for working from home, running errands, parenting, or just being chic and comfortable.

As a working mom, I often need to head out the door in a hurry while juggling kid, stuff for the day, and more. Adding a jacket and keeping track of it can be hard, especially when temperatures are variable. I find that a longer sweater can do double duty as an inside layer and a light jacket to run out the door with. Yes, you can throw the sweater on when heading out, or just have it as part of your outfit for when you will be doing a lot of in and out activities. It’s so much easier than stopping each time in and out to put something on/take it off. I know I am often juggling to much to do so. I love the Sweetheart Sweater for this. There are some other great choices from cabi this fall, including the Lara Sweater and Napa Vest.

Beyond Tee Styling Technique: Basic Beyond Tee

To work the “Basic Beyond Tee” technique:

  1. Put it on the frontwards way with the tag in back for a lower neckline
  2. Make sure the tunic and panels are not tucked in
  3. Go!

Tips:

  • Think outside the normal leggings or jeans with a tee and look for unique pieces that are just as comfortable, like this Beyond Tee
  • Wear a longer sweater as both an inside layer and a coat for a quick and easy day of going in and out
  • Keep your sweater lighter to not add bulk or a few pounds
  • Go for a longer sweater with shape, such as a defined waist, to give the outfit shape—this may help shorter people rock the longer sweater too!
  • Add a gray leggings to break up an all-black look, but still keep the feel; or add some fun bright leggings to liven this up
  • Keep your shoes practical and fun with some patterned sneakers
  • Thrown on an easy over-the-head long necklace to go with the flow of this easy look

Pleated Star POW: Beachy Warrior Goddess Date Night

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix tough with feminine and goddess accessories for a beachy warrior goddess date night look

Friday Night Drinks POW outfits are for going out on a date, getting drinks, seeing a band play, going to dinner and a movie—something where you want to look good and may wear some sexier clothes and statement pieces. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End. This is a fun way to dress down the skirt, for a funky date night look. Instead of taking the pretty, feminine flow of the skirt, and adding to it with other pretty and feminine things, I add strong, dark pieces for a bold, edgier look.  While this is a more summery outfit, you can get the same tough feel by adding a moto jacket over the muscle tee, which will also show off some crazy curves, and maybe switching out the sandals for some boots. Like some other date night outfits, this one is a fun mix of contrasts, while maintaining a feminine feel. This one is great for a seaside date of casual fine dining and a walk or the beach. But could work for anything where you want to be comfortable, and don’t need t be too casual or too dressy. I love the added touch of feminine strength with the Athena necklace. Not only does it go nicely with the gladiator-style sandals, but it adds to the tough and feminine feel of the outfit—perhaps Athena would wear this for a date?

Tips:

  • Dress down a pretty, feminine skirt with strong, dark pieces like a muscle tee and gladiator sandal for a warrior goddess tough & feminine date night look
  • Black adds sex appeal generally (thus the LBD), and especially in this outfit
  • Add toughness to an outfit with a muscle tee or other edgy tee or tank and gladiator-style sandals for warm weather or a moto jacket and moto boots for cooler weather (or some mix for fall!)
  • Tie longer tees/tanks at the waist to create more of an hourglass shape by emphasize the waist; it can also add flair and hide the belly
  • Accessorize with handmade jewelry for a one-of-a-kind look that likely supports small business or individuals
  • Wear a striking ring on your index or middle finger for a more striking and eye-catching look with attitude

Stitch Fix Review: Diamonds, Sailboats, and Sneakers Fix Three

As discussed in my last (and first) Stitch Fix review, I joined Stitch Fix recently, thanks to an Instagram friend and fellow cabi addict, Jenni. Stitch Fix is a subscription-based  personal styling service.  For more on how Stitch Fix works, do check out my first review. After two good Fixes, I decided to keep on going with my subscription. I continue to love Stitch Fix and look forward to the delivery of each box!

Keeping with “tradition,” I figured I would review for you my third Fix! My style profile and requests stayed nearly the same, although I did make two requests unique to the fix:

  1. I asked for comfortable shoes to run around in
  2. I asked for bra-friendly sleeveless tops

The first, because I did not have decent options and had been looking for a while. I want cute and comfy. The second because I have a lot of sleeveless tops that do not have bra-friendly straps and I can only wear a strapless bra so many days week before we all suffer (me and anyone around me). I need more I can wear a normal bra with!

Let’s see how my stylist did!

Unboxing

Interested in my initial reactions? I made a video of the unboxing (disclaimer: I’ve only ever done two other videos before—including one for my second Fix--and I used my laptop, so it is not high quality). It’s casual and you get to hear my voice and learn more about me.

The Five Items

I received two tops, one pair of shoes, one skirt, and a dress. Since I am posting this after I decided, you get my final decisions.

Kedavra Colorblock Cami Blouse, Leena Printed Skirt, Monterey Lace-up Sneakers all from my Stitch Fix, along with older Stella & Dot earrings.

Kedavra Colorblock Cami Blouse, Leena Printed Skirt, Monterey Lace-up Sneakers all from my Stitch Fix, along with older Stella & Dot earrings.

1. Kedavra Colorblock Cami Blouse by 41Hawthron: First, is this bra-friendly? No. I’d need to wear a strapless or have the strap show. I love the soft black (or navy?) mixed with lavender and light pink—it gives it a vintage feel. The waist and draping are flattering, covering my tummy and complimenting my chest. It’s a light cool fabric and would be good for work under a jacket or cardigan or for a date with a cute pair of jeans or pencil skirt. The problem is, I have a lot of tops that fill this niche in my closet. This is the type of top cabi specializes in. I like it, but don’t love it, and I don’t need it. Especially not for near sixty dollars. Now, if it had wider straps and I could have worn a bra with it, I would have probably gotten it. Honestly, asking for bra-friendly and getting this was enough of a disappointment that I was less inclined to purchase it.

Cost: $58.00

Verdict: Did not purchase

Tammi Print Dress from Stitch Fix along with along with older Stella & Dot earrings and Bow Ballet Flats from Canvas by Land's End.

Tammi Print Dress from Stitch Fix along with along with older Stella & Dot earrings and Bow Ballet Flats from Canvas by Land's End.

2. Tammi Print Dress by 41Hawthron: Better, but still not bra-friendly (I might be able to wear a racer-back, but highly bra dependent). So, disappointment there. This dress was a bit of a surprise on. The print was not really me—nautical I love, but often less literally. And the orange made it seem… cutesy rather than cute. But I did like the dress on. The cut was fairly flattering, and the fabric soft. I loved the side waist tie—fun and different. But, I’m not sure where I would wear this. My sundresses don’t get worn enough. I have other dresses that work better for work. And, while I liked it, I didn’t love it. Even my husband thought it cute, but limited in use.

Cost: $68.00

Verdict: Did not purchase

Visperas Crochet Back Top, Leena Printed Skirt, Monterey Lace-up Sneakers all from my Stitch Fix, along with older Stella & Dot earrings.

Visperas Crochet Back Top (back) and Leena Printed Skirt from my Stitch Fix, along with older Stella & Dot earrings.

3. Leena Printed Skirt by Renee C: This was an instant love! My concern unboxing it was fit. Pencil skirts and my hips do not always agree (but when they do! Bliss!). But it fit! The fabric is a very stretchy knit. I love the below-knee length—it looks a bit classier and sleeker this way. I love the diamond print. It looks 60s to me, without going overboard. This skirt easily dresses up or down (as you will see later). It’s perfect for work or a date. It’s also great with some sneakers and a fun tee. My wardrobe needed this skirt and I didn’t even know it! (I wore this in all pictures except the dress one)

Cost: $54.00

Verdict: Purchased!

4.  Visperas Crochet Back Top by Skies are Blue: The back of this top is fabulous! The crochet is so pretty and flattering. But look! It’s not bra-friendly! This is three for three. Such a disappointment. I loved the pretty crochet with the small triangle print—nice contract. But the fit of the top was not great. My chest was too big and pulling to top oddly. Plus it did not flow over the belly as much as I would like. And this has the same problem as Kedavra top. My closet is full of these types of top (not with the crochet back, of course). I will buy more, but they have to fit well and be special enough to kick some of the others out of my closet. (top in both pictures in this group)

Cost: $48.00

Verdict: Did not purchase

Leena Printed Skirt and Monterey Lace-up Sneakers all from my Stitch Fix, along with older Stella & Dot earrings, the cabi Spring 2016 Sleeveless Swing Tee, and Pendant Necklace with Teardrop Stone from Target.

Leena Printed Skirt and Monterey Lace-up Sneakers all from my Stitch Fix, along with older Stella & Dot earrings, the cabi Spring 2016 Sleeveless Swing Tee, and Pendant Necklace with Teardrop Stone from Target.

5. Monterey Lace-up Sneakers by SeaVees: These are just what I asked for—practical comfy shoes I can run around in. And I love the “light purple” color (what they called it; I might go for “dusky lavender”). It’s a kick of fun, but in a near neutral that will go with so much. I adore them with the Leena skirt to dress it down. I actually had ordered some Converse in a similar, but less neutral, lavender, but they did not fit. It’s like the stylist knew just what I wanted here! Perfect for me and my wardrobe! You can see these also in some of the other pictures--I wore them with each outfit, except the dress.

Cost: $68.00

Verdict: Kept (although I exchanged them for a size up)

So what do you think? Did I choose wisely?

I loved the Leena skirt and sneakers so much, I modeled another fun look with a Spring 2016 cabi top. See how versatile the shoes and skirt are? How fun are they with the Sleeveless Swing Tee from cabi?

Destructed White Week in Review

Our tenth POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. With these edgy, soft, destructed jeans, we went from pretty in pink for a special occasion to the eating hot dogs at a ball game. We went to the boardroom and the breakroom in two different office looks—one nautical & sophisticated and one soft & feminine. The Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans can be rocked from casual to dressy, adding edge and comfort to your style wardrobe and more versatility than you may have thought.

Due to some health issues and a busy summer, this was also our longest “week” yet!

Without further ado, let’s review this destructed white “week!” Which outfit is your favorite? Which surprised you the most?

Destructed White POW: Bare Shoulders, Strong & Sexy Date Night

Outfit Mission Statement: For an ageless, sexy date night look, bare your shoulders (but feel free to keep everything else covered)

Friday Night Drinks POW outfits are for going out on a date, getting drinks, seeing a band play, going to dinner and a movie—something where you want to look good and may wear some sexier clothes and statement pieces. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. If you have been fallowing this blog, you know I like to mix opposites—pretty with tough, fancy with casual. This is a bit of both of those.  We have the casual destructed jean that have the tough edge, with the pretty sleeveless, floaty, and sparkly blouse. This mix is particularly fun for date nights, when you can play with opposites for a sexy, on-trend look.

One nice thing about current trends is the shoulder. The shoulder had been given its time to show off. Halter tops, off-shoulder, cold shoulder, “x-factor,” and more bare the shoulder. Luckily, the shoulder is a body part that tends to look good for a wide range of ages and sizes. We all have sexy shoulders. So, our sexy shoulders are perfect for an on-trend, sexy date night. If you don’t like your upper arms, go with an off-shoulder or cold shoulder top that covers your areas of concern. One nice thing about bare shoulders is you can be otherwise covered up and still be sexy.

Tips:

  • Mix the edgy destructed jeans with a pretty, flowy blouse for a strong & feminine look
  • For a sexy, on-trend date night look bare those shoulders
    • But if you need some arm coverage, go with an off-shoulder cold shoulder tops that have coverage where you want it
  • Add playful touches, like an unexpected higher ponytail
  • Dress up your destructed boyfriend jeans with sparkles, beads, and a shiny clutch
  • For an easy, put together look, limit your pallet to two neutrals, one metal, and bold color (although feel free to add a red lip for sass)
  • Yes, roll those jeans to show off your awesome, sexy, sparkly shoes
  • If your shoulders are bare, go for long, dangly earrings to further emphasize those shoulders

Destructed White POW: Shady Lace & Rips Saturday

Outfit Mission Statement: For fun, cool, sophisticated take on the white-out trend, opt for mixing off whites

Play Day Saturday are clothes for taking your kids to the park, running errands, talking your dog for a walk, shopping, picnicking, traveling, going to a museum or a zoo—out and about or home having fun clothes. These are the clothes you often live the best parts of your life in! The POW (Piece of the Week) the cabi Spring 2016 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. This might be a little dressier than an outfit for taking your kid(s) to the park, but it is a fun, casual look complete with sun protection! This outfit could have also worked for Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific, because it is both trendy and rather terrific. The outfit is a great example of the “white out” trend of mixing different whites for a cool, put-together look. It is also terrific, if I say so myself. In fact, this outfit convinced me to purchase the Capri Top. In this shoot, I am wearing my stylist’s sample. I loved wearing it for the pictures, and then when I looked at the photos, I knew I had to have it. It is so terrific that I sold it to myself!

This outfit is a lot of fun. I love the mix of crochet lace, destructed white denim, shady hat, open-toed shoes, coin necklace, and woven bag. The mix of whites, mostly in the antique, ivory, and cream directions, looks and feels cool and comfortable. Can you tell it was 95 when I took these pictures? I was so hot, but do not look it! I love this outfit and I hope you do.

Tips:

  • When mixing whites, remember you do not have to include a “true” white, you can mix all off whites for an even more sophisticated take on the trend
  • Add a hat sun protection and a carefree, fun accessory
  • Oversized tops work best with slim or skinny bottoms, to give you a longer look and to balance out the top (oversized+oversized=oversized you)
    • If you like the ease of boyfriend jeans, consider a slim boyfriend for a great mix of ease with a slim bottom
  • Add a touch of color under the lace top to better pop the lace—here I went with blush that blends nicely with the off whites, looking like almost a darker white
  • Show off the shoes and add more of the casual to the outfit by rolling the jeans (but I don’t need to say this again do I?)
  • You can use the white as a platform to pop some bright jewelry or choose pieces that work with the theme, allowing the lace top to catch the eye (I prefer the later for this lovely top)
  • Try things on, and better yet, make them into outfits you would wear before deciding if they work for you —as I did this this top. You may be surprised what works and what doesn’t.

Destructed White POW: Working It Professional, High-End, Destructed Wednesday

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix high-end, sophisticated pieces with your destructed jean for a rich, yet edgy, boardroom look

Working it Wednesday outfits are professional career clothes, often a step or two above Manic Monday outfits. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. Destructed jeans may not be everyone’s idea of office appropriate. If this doesn’t work for your office, consider regular white jeans, white linen pants, or other white pants instead. As discussed in Pretty in Pink & Pearls Sunday Best, the trick to making destructed jeans work for dressier occasions, like work, is to combine it with dressier/more professional pieces, even over the top dressy/professional pieces.   High-end pieces with special details can be the way to do that. Think designer. Think quality. Think professional. The high-end Cruise Jacket is a perfect example of a classy, professional piece with rich details, like gold and enamel buttons. Even with destructed jeans, you can create a rich, boardroom-ready outfit by combining them with sophisticated and classy items.

Tips:

  • Mix destructed jeans with high-end, professional pieces that have rich details for a sophisticated, yet edgy, office look
  • Add a lux leopard print belt for a funky, yet classy touch
  • Mix sophisticated patterns, like a nautical stripe and classy leopard print, to add class and style
  • Grab a designer handbag for a polished finishing touch
  • Look for luxurious, but not loud, accessories to add further sophistication and affluence
  • Consider rich fabrics, like suede, faux animal hair, and luxurious woven fabrics to contrast with the rips
  • Style your hair in a sleek chignon for a smooth, put-together look
  • Combine different shades of white for on-trend sophistication

Three Tips for Fabulous Fourth Style: Tip Two—Mix Prints for a more Festive Look!

For a fun and festival Fourth of July look, mix prints in red, white, and blue. This will be a more unexpected look, especially if you choose prints that are not something clearly "Fourth of July prints"—like an American flag print. Bonus points if you can mix a strip with a star print!

Tips for making it work:

Three prints, including a star print and stripe print. Outfit: Striped Favorite Tank, Picnic Short, Star Print Scarf, and the Bow Ballet Flats

Three prints, including a star print and stripe print. Outfit: Striped Favorite Tank, Picnic Short, Star Print Scarf, and the Bow Ballet Flats

  • Make one of your prints stripes for more clear reference to Independence Day
  • Consider mixing a stripes print and a star print, if you have them, for a fun play on the American flag (and this mixes two of the same types of prints [geometric], which is a win for print mixing)
  • For the Fourth, you can have a lot of fun mixing prints in the three colors, which automatically gives you a limited palette and the opportunity to go bigger and bolder than normal
  • Follow the rule for mixing prints so the outfit works together, especially these:
    • It may be easier to mix prints if you choose one main color that is in each of the prints to bring the outfit together (white may be easiest and is used in my examples)
    • For a more complicated mix, try prints with different main color (such as red, white, and blue) [These last two conflict, but either can work, so go with what best fits your style and experience with mixing prints]
    • If mixing prints in the same color, emphasize differences in size, fabric, and style of print
    • Play with size, mixing smaller prints with larger prints

    • Consider stripes a neutral when mixing prints

Not just for fireworks: Nine Versatile Pieces for your Fourth of July and Patriotic Wardrobe

The Fourth of July is quickly approaching and many of us may be thinking about what we are going to wear.  Here are nine pieces you can buy now for a great Fourth of July look that will also work in your general wardrobe. A few of these I regularly wear to work!

1.  Kris Top: This cabi spring 2016 on-trend cropped (but not too short) top, has a crossover asymmetrical hem. It is a light navy knit—perfect for hot summer celebrations. Consider rocking it with some red shorts (such as the Picnic Short) and patriotic accessories (such as this Star Print Scarf!).  Or pair it with a pretty skirt!

2. Star Print Scarf: This festive and fun scarf has blue stars with pops of red ones. It works wonderfully for the Fourth, but can add a fun touch to any outfit year round. It pairs wonderfully with the picnic shorts and either the Kris Top or Striped Favorite Tank. It would also be fabulous over a red dress, blue dress, or white dress for a pop of patriotic.

3. Picnic Short: These cute cabi spring 2016 shorts have red, purple, and pink in them. With some blue or white they are perfect for the Fourth or other patriotic holidays, but always work perfectly with summer tops and tees. The subtle print mixes easily with stripes and other patterns.

4.  Striped Favorite Tank: This easy, casual tank by Merona at Target, is a great piece for a casual Fourth of July look. I love it with the patterns for the Picnic Short and Star Print Scarf for fun,  patriotic pattern play. You could also wear with white, denim blue, or red shorts. Or dress it ups with a fun skirt for the Fourth.

5.  Pleated Star Skirt: I love this skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End! It is so pretty, fun, and feminine. I also love stars and am delighted to find them on a work-friendly skirt! This skirt is perfect for a dressier Fourth of July celebration. It works well with the Sleeveless Double Drape Tee for this. Or dress it down with a tee and some causal shoes.  This is even on sale right now. Stay tuned for more on this skirt.

6.  Sleeveless Double Drape Tee: This is another cabi spring 2016 garment. It is an incredibly flattering tee that will add some “va va voom” to your fireworks. It dress up nicely, as shown with the Pleated Star Skirt. But you can rock with jeans, shorts, or whatever. It’s cute with the Picnic Short too!

7. Bow Ballet Flats: These timeless flats can add a pop of red (or blue) to your patriotic outfit, and also work every day. They are cute and comfortable. They work well with shorts, jeans, or a skirt. I love them with a mostly blue and white outfit, for a burst of red. I do suggest sizing up a half a size.

8. Butterfly Print Scarf: This pretty summery scarf by ITB Design can add blue and flow to your Fourth of July outfit. It’s large and works well as a warp when the temperature drop as you wait for fireworks. It can also be worn around the neck during the day, as I have shown with the Star Print Scarf. The butterfly deign works wonderfully for spring and summer. Consider wearing it over a red dress for a fun and unexpected Fourth look.

9. Cruise Jacket: This classic, high-end styled jacket is also one of my favorite cabi pieces of the Spring 2016 season. It easily works for a dressy Fourth of July look, but can also be a fun addition to a casual outfit, as I style it here. Consider rocking it with ripped jeans; linen pants in your favorite patriotic color; a navy pencil skirt; a red dress; or with a casual tee shirt, cut-off shorts, and a ball cap! I love rocking it casually. This nautical piece works wonderfully for the office or special occasion too—not just for fireworks!

My Favorite 10 (11? 13?) cabi Spring 2016 Pieces

Anyone who has spent any time on this blog or my Instagram feed or who has met me knows I am big cabi fan. In fact, it is due in part to my great experiences with cabi that I started this blog. Now the first season of cabi since the blog started, Spring 2016, is coming to a close. So, I thought I’d share my ten favorite (plus some extra) pieces from the collection, most of which you have seen here.

What are your favorites?

1.       Traveler Pants: While I did not feature these in a POW (Piece of the Week), I did feature them as one of the seven transitional pieces you need now and they were part of a POW outfit with the Plume Top. These pants are amazing! They are so soft and comfortable! I lived in them this spring (just check out my Instagram feed!). I love that they are very on-trend (Jennifer Aniston has a pair just like them) and have a rough, practical military feel. I knew they weather travel with a toddler quite well (which is as close as I ever hope to get to a war zone).  The have a slight crop and can easily be rolled up for more of a cropped look and/or to show off those cute heels or sandals. The elasticized ankle cuff, reminiscent of some track pants, gives them a sporty feel. The fit is slim, so they are a comfortable fit that is not skinny or baggy. They are made from a cotton spandex sateen that feels great on but has a certain ruggedness. I ended up buying second pair, because I was wearing them so much! Shopping tip: Size down one to two sizes below your normal cabi pants size. I normally wear an 8 (style dependent), but got these in both a six and four and the four is the better fit (and I need to unbutton them to get them off). I ADORE THESE PANTS!

2. Verde Jacket: I’ve also not focused on this jacket much here. I considered it for a POW, but ran out of time. However, I did style it with the Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans (“Destructed White: It’s Terrific Being Green Thursday”). This bright “jelly bean green” color is striking and unexpected. I get compliments every time I wear it! The jacket had a vintage, feminine feel to it, with adorable box details on the pockets (which are not overly girly in implementation). It has a very flattering cut with a peplum waist—clearly highlighting/creating your hourglass shape, and hiding that extra you may have around your waist. This jacket can easily be dressed up or down. So far, I’ve mostly worn it for work, as it makes a light, professional layer. I must admit, part of my love of this jacket is how good the color looks on me. This is not a color that with work as well for everyone—but certainly is something many a redhead can rock (and many others too).

3. Margherita Dress: Yes, we have here a POW! This fun, easy, breezy sundress was my eight POW. As I show, it is very versatile and can work for office, play, dressing up, or whatever! You can buy it in two prints, this navy and white print version or a prism pattern. One of the best things about this sundress is the pockets! It is a longer length—not quite maxi—with an asymmetrical hem. It is a light and cool viscose fabric. It moves and blows easily in the breeze. Check out the POW for more!

4. Cruise Jacket: This classic, high-end styled jacket was featured in my “Go-To POW: Working It Classic Nautical Wednesday” and you will see it again soon! This is an amazing piece with great details, like the gold and email buttons. It is a “Love, Carol” piece, which is a special sub collection of higher-end pieces designed by Carol Anderson (the CA in cabi). It has a nautical feel to it with navy, cream, and red stripes. The fabric is a very soft woven fabric that is light and cool. It is a tailored jacket that creates fine lines. The jacket works well for work (I’ve worn it a few times), but can also be dressed down with some destructed jeans for a fun, casual look. This piece is really special.

5. Go-To Trouser: This is another POW and during that POW I really fell in love with them. At first glance, they may seem to just be black trousers. But looking closely, you will see they are a shorter style pants (“ankle skimming”). They are a light, but sturdy, blend of cotton, modal, and spandex, which means they move and stretch wonderfully. Which also means, they are very comfortable. The shorter length allows you to really show off some fun shoes. While perfect for work (especially on hot summer days), they can easily for nearly any occasion, as I show in the POW.  I highly recommend these wardrobe essentials! I could go on forever about them, but why don’t you check out the POW?

6. Bardot Shirt: Yes, we have another POW—the lovely, boho & boutique vibe Bardot Shirt. This shirt turned me from not liking denim shirts on me to loving them. I’ve even bough another since. The navy embroidery gives it a boutique and Southwestern feel, which is a fun combination! It works well as a cover up or layer, along with as a blouse. It can easily be dressed up for work, special occasions, and dates. The faded blue makes it an easy choice for the denim-on-denim trend, as it will likely be a different color then the other denim pieces you are wearing together.

7. Lido Skirt: You cannot go wrong with a navy ponte pencil skirt. I’ve talked about how ponte is the perfect work fabric. I’ve also suggested ponte knit pencil skirt is a must. Plus, navy is a fabulous new neutral and power color. Combined, you have the perfect skirt! I did not feature the Lido Skirt as a POW, but did post about is a transitional piece you need now and styled it in the Fall into Spring outfit. Pencil skirts are flattering and can work on many different body types. I love them for work. This one has a few cool features. First, it has pockets! And it also have a tiered hem for a subtle touch of style.

8. Sleeveless Double Drape Tee: This is an incredibly flattering top. The draping gives you curves if you don’t have them and it flatters what you do have (even hiding if you have a bit extra).  I styled this in the Michelle POW: Working It Navy Power Wednesday if you want to see how great it is for work. It also can be worn casually and really would help you rock a date. I know women from XS to XL who love this top! Plus, it is navy!

9.  Destructed Slim Boyfriend: These white jeans are my current POW. They are an amazingly soft denim in a vintage white. They have striking contrast trim, for a special touch. The slim boyfriend shape is flattering and comfortable. The destruction (rips) add an edge and can be a fun element, especially in otherwise fancy outfits. They roll up nicely, to show off fun heels or sandals. For an on-trend white jean, it doesn’t get my better!

10.   Multiple sleeveless tops: I can’t decide. So, I’m cheating a bit here. There are several nice sleeveless tops in the collection this season, and I couldn’t just pick one. They all have very different features and style. So, among my favorites, you can pick yours:

a. Luisa Tank: This bright floral, racer-back style tank is cheerful and fun. I didn’t really like it until I tried it on and then it became a must have! It works great for work, play, dressy, or casual. See it styles for work in “Run Around POW: Elegant Layers and Brights Manic Monday.”

b. Bella Top: This graceful, feminine beauty looks great on. The flowing, ruffled layer under the straight layer, gives it a unique look. The soft floral has a mix of colors, so this top can go with a lot. The merrowed edges give it a modern touch. I did not style it on the blog yet. But, expect to see it on Instagram a lot this summer! It goes well with a lot, but I love it with denim cut-offs.

c. Tivoli Top: In contrast to bright or feminine, we have this fierce black, ivory, and taupe animal print top. It have wonderful touches like lacy mesh and a keyhole closure.  Its wonder for work (especially with the Go-To Trouser), but works for dates or anything. I’ve styled it for work and with one on-trend bright jeans and a fall black jacket.

11.   Martini Top: This is my “honorable mention” as it deserves to be on the list. This navy print blouse (with whiter and green “olives”), has a swingy relaxed fit in a button-down style. It has a bit of a 60s feel to it. It has ¾ length sleeves for a cool summer look. While it can be styled down, I find it perfect for work. I styled it on the blog in a few different ways, including Run Around POW: Off to the Races Saturday and Michelle POW: Analogous Color Fun Saturday.

I really did love this season of cabi, and it was hard to choose just ten, or eleven, or I guess 13 favorite pieces! Which are your favorites?

If you would like any of these contact your cabi stylist ASAP! I believe the season ends June 30th. If you do not have a stylist, please contact me in the comments or via email, reach out to my (Joni Allen via email or phone: 770 502-5243 [call or text]), or find a cabi stylist near you

Fall into Spring (or Summer) 5 & 6: Bring Your Fall Blouses Forward into Spring and Summer!

This is part five and six of my Fall into Spring adventure (see below for a list of the previous four). I’m highlighting six great pieces from the cabi Fall collection that you may have in your wardrobe and showing how you can wear them with the spring cabi collection or your own spring pieces. If you don’t have these pieces or if you are not a cabi fan, I’ll discuss how you can take similar pieces and rock the more traditional fall pieces this spring and summer!

Since the fifth and sixth pieces have much and common, and because it is now summer, I am combining them into a single post. Most of the tips can be applied to either. The fifth piece may look familiar, as this lovely pieces was our second POW, the Love Blouse! This is a pretty, longer-length sleeveless blouse with a gathered collar. It’s a great year-round piece, as I will show. Another great year-round piece, is another sleeveless fall blouse—the Stained Glass Blouse. This blouse has over twenty different colors in it, and is a striking, artistic blouse that goes with anything. The bolder, darker colors may see more fall-like, but they can work perfectly for the spring and summer. If you do not own either of these cabi blouses from Fall 2015, look in your closet for other colorful, sleeveless fall blouses (or really any colorful sleeveless blouses). Or, you can consider spring blouses instead, such as the Bella Top, the Blossom Top (which will work well in the fall too—another year-round option!), the Gelato Top, or the Vita Blouse.

Tips:

  • Make your fall blouses more spring or summery by mixing them with bright warm weather colors like citron and bougainvillea
  • Add spring layers, such as shrugs and cardigans, over the fall blouse to help bring them forward
  • Since they are sleeveless, consider wearing the blouses without layers and with shorts or skirts for a quick warm-weather look
  • Wear the blouses with the classic summer neutral, navy, for instance summer appeal (consider the Mariner Trouser, Capote Trouser, Michelle Cardigan, Lido Jacket, and Lido Skirt)
  • Add summer accessories and shoes, like off-white sandals, for a summer feel
  • Combine the fall blouses with spring fabrics, like chiffon and linen, to aid a spring air
  • Wear the blouses more casually, as summer and spring have a more casual feel
  • Consider lighter layers, such as ones with three-quarter sleeves (or rolled up) or thinner fabrics to enhance the summer vibe
  • Wear button-up fall blouses, such as the Love Blouse, unbuttoned over tanks, camis, sundresses, and even swimsuits for a fall twist on a summer layer
  • Rock the blouses with some of the spring trends to give it a fresh feel—such as the Traveler Pant

There are many other ways to spring that fall blouse forward—mix with summer colors, styles, and weights and wear it in ways you wear your normal spring and summer sleeveless blouses. Let me know how you are rocking them!

Destructed White: It’s Terrific Being Green Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix solid colors and play brights off white for pop of polished fun!

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. This week I focus on two—trendy and terrific. Bright colors are a trend and this jellybean green is certainly bright! Paired with these white jeans it even pops more. I added a few more trends—nautical navy stripes, denim-on-denim, and eyelets—all things that are very in. But, the real reason I choose this outfit is I love the top and blazer—the colors and style of both is fabulous. I wanted to show them off, and what better way than with two neutrals—a white and a navy?

The jacket was one of the first items I bought from cabi this season. I adore it. It’s a great lighter summer weight, but heavy enough it could work year round (at least in Georgia). The sleeves roll up nicely for the modern look. And it has these great bow details on the pockets (check it out on the cabi site, none of my pictures do it justice). Every time I wear this jacket I get multiple compliments.

The eyelet blouse is also a great piece. I love eyelets to begin with. But I really like how the eyelet pattern here is more modern and not the more feminine patterns I normally see—it’s almost a puzzle type of pattern. I also love the wide, forgiving shape of it. The wider straps are also nice—they easily cover bra straps, making this a great layering piece.

I combined them both with some favorite pieces—this fun bug necklace; my preppy, nautical stripe clutch; and these great espadrille wedges; plus, of course, these edgy jeans! The result is a fun, surprising, and very “me” outfit.

Tips:

  • Play bright colors off white jeans to give the colors even more pop
  • For a different, yet together & polished look, try mixing solids colors or very large patterns (like the striped clutch)
  • Want compliments? Wear great pieces you love
  • Don’t be afraid to dress in bright colors and a couple of neutrals—you do not need patterns to have fun with color
  • When creating outfits that are very “you” look for favorite pieces and see if they work—don’t be afraid to experiment (at the very least you will probably love it)
  • Look for pieces with unique features and details—like the box pockets and eyelet pattern—for a distinctive look that will draw attention and make you feel like a million bucks
  • When your outfit is a mix of solid colors, consider adding a fun statement necklace to add visual interest
  • I’ve said it before, and will say it again—consider rolling the sleeves on your jackets for a modern touch (and it keeps you a bit cooler in the summer heat)

Destructed White POW: Pretty in Pink & Pearls Sunday Best

Outfit Mission Statement: Dress your destructed denim up for a special occasion look with fancy, feminine pieces for a pretty, edgy, feminine, and comfortable outfit!

Sunday Best POW outfits are special occasion clothes for dinning, theater, opera, holiday parties, church, and other such occasions that need something special. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. Ripped jeans are not what some of us would think of as an appropriate special occasion look. But, you can dress them up to make them work for at least some special occasions. The trick, as with any casual piece, is to combine it with dressier pieces, even over-the-top dressy pieces. Together the outfit averages dressier. Plus, it can be fun to mix pretty with edgy and dressy with casual! Still, these jeans may now work in some special occasion situations. If you cannot do destructed, consider replacing these with white jeans. If you cannot do jean, consider replacing these with white linen pants, such as the Piazza Pant.

But, if you can do destructed white jeans for your special occasion, this outfit can be a lot of fun to rock! You can be pretty, edgy, feminine, and comfortable all at the same time! This may be one of my favorite outfits I’ve done here (and it is one of my favorite sets of photos!).

Tips:

  • Dress up your destructed jeans with fancy, dressy pieces; you can even go over the top if you want!
  • Play off the edgy destructed look with feminine, pretty pieces—think pinks, pearls, and sparkles
  • Grab a pretty shawl to keep you warm in places with two much AC or cooler nights (plus it adds to the dressiness)
  • Add a designer clutch or wristlet in a pretty matching color to add style (and convenience)
  • Dress your feet up in those sparkly, special occasion shoes and roll up your jeans to show them off
  • Put your hair up in a pretty hair accessory for an added touch of class & sophistication (plus you can show off your shoulders)
  • Look for dressy accessories with special touches, like ribbon bows in the back, for added touches of fancy
  • Choose a peplum top with a gentle ruffle bottom to hide any tummy issues and add more femininity

POW 10: The White Destructed Slim Boyfriend Jean

Do you have white jeans? Do you have multiple pairs of white jeans? I must admit I was first very leery of white jeans. I am a bit of a klutz and am always getting things on me. So white jeans did not seem like a wise option. But I tried my first pair (will it shock you to learn they were cabi?) and loved them. I also didn’t spill anything on them! Now, I am a big fan. They add a fresh, summer look and work well with so many different styles of clothes. They have become a wardrobe staple for me. I’d not say they are a wardrobe essential, but certainly a staple. You don’t need them, but they will become a go-to piece perfect especially for spring and summer.

I have three pairs of white jeans now: boot cut, skinnies, and these fabulous Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans from cabi Spring 2016. I love the laid back ease with a bit of edge these have. They are slouchy loose without being baggy and are made of a very soft denim that is a pleasure to wear. The contrast stitching is a nice touch and adds to the style of the jeans. They are also an on-trend “vintage white,” which will mix beautifully with other whites. I didn’t plan to make them a POW (Piece of the Week), but Kendria Thompson of Solid Treasures Jewelry suggested them. I wasn’t sure about styling them a more formal office or special occasion. But I decided to take on the challenge. While I found ways to style them for formal offices and special occasions, they still make not be dressy enough (with the rips) to work for these two environments. However, you can easy substitute other white jeans or pants for a similar look without the destruction.

If you would like the Destructed Slim Boyfriend, contact your cabi stylist. If you do not have one, please contact me in the comments or via email, reach out to my (Joni Allen via email or phone: 770 502-5243 [call or text]), or find a cabi stylist near you. If you want some white jeans, but do not like the style of these (perhaps you are not a fan of destruction in our jeans), you can find white jeans almost anywhere right now. Cabi has another pair these season, the Slimmie, which is a new silhouette that is looser than a skinny, but not a boyfriend. It’s great for those who want a slim leg but don’t like the skinny look or feel. Old Navy has many different styles of white jeans—such as the similar Boyfriend Straight Jeans, Mid-Rise Stay White Rockstar Skinny Jeans, and the Mid-Rise Curvy Straight White Jeans (plus they are having a great sale right now and an additional 30% off order over $75 online today only! Banana Republic also has some choices, including the Destructed White Boyfriend Jean and the White Flare Jean.

Do join us for the tenth POW and discover seven ways, from a night on the town, to the playground, office, home, and more to style this laid back, soft, and edgy wardrobe staple, the Destructed Slim Boyfriend, or any white jean!

Bardot Week in Review

Our ninth POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt, a denim shirt with a boho, Southwest feel and lovely navy embroidery. This is the shirt that taught me to love denim shirts! With this boutique-styled denim shirt, we learned how to style a boho southwestern sparkly princess look; a classy denim & linen work look; and an easy, casual boho antiquing look. We learned to style denim-on-denim, different ways to tie and wear a denim shirt, ways to dress up a denim shirt, and more. We took the shirt from the office, to the flea market, to the garden, to summer theater, to a great date night. The Bardot Shirt is a versatile piece that adds a funky, boutique, boho, southwestern flair to your style wardrobe.

Without further ado, let’s review this denim week! Which is your favorite?

Bardot POW: Working It Wrapped, Classy Linen & Denim Wednesday

Outfit Mission Statement: Make your denim shirt work for work by pairing it with a classic neutral linen trouser and sophisticated accessories

Working it Wednesday outfits are professional career clothes, often a step or two above Manic Monday outfits. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt. Of course, the easy way to dress up a denim shirt for the boardroom would be to add it to a two piece suit, or wear a blazer, or do any number of rather predictable, but interesting, things. However, for a lovely denim shirt with special details, like this one, you don’t need to go the easy way. Simply add professional, quality pieces that say class and sophistication, and you can make it work!

Tips:

  • Dress up your denim shirt for work by pairing it with a nice, professional pair of linen trousers in a neutral
  • Add classy accessories and shoes to add sophistication and professionalism
  • Consider mixing lighter neutrals for a cultured look, such as cream, beige, burnished gold, and leopard print
  • A fine quality leopard print belt can add class to a work look (but be careful of going overboard, leopard can get trashy is there is too much or the quality is poor)
  • Just because it is a button-down, it does not mean you need to button it all the way down!  Consider a diagonal wrap instead (see directions below)
  • Want more sophistication? Add a designer handbag
  • Consider a nice crisp cream linen, for a more refined look
  • Tuck in your shirt for a dressier look

Directions for Wrap Tuck:

  • Start with a denim shirt that is baggy on you (a size up)
  • Button the buttons down to your bust or a bit lower (more or less depending on the amount you want to wrap)
  • With your pants undone, take the shirttail of the piece that is on top (has the button holes), and wrap around you, creating a diagonal line
  • With a safety pin, pin the shirttail into this diagonal shape, making sure the pin stays below where the pants will tuck (if needed add more above the tuck line, just find ways to do it invisibly)
  • Tuck in your shirt, making sure to keep the diagonal
  • Add a belt for additional waist slimming attention

Bardot POW: Ponte and Knotted Manic Monday

Outfit Mission Statement: For a comfortable, professional Monday outfit, dress up your denim shirt with a navy ponte pencil skirt

Manic Monday outfits are easy career clothes to throw on for manic Mondays. This Monday we focus on creating an professional, comfortable work outfit. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 of Bardot Shirt. The denim shirt in general, and the Bardot in particular, dress up very nicely for a casual work look. The embroidery on the Bardot gives it a special touch that works well for a casual Friday or Monday. Any casual button down shirt can be quickly and easily dressed a with a nice pencil skirt. The pencil skirt adds instant professionalism. And no one has to know if is the amazing, comfortable ponte knit (remember, I’ve suggested a ponte knit pencil skirt is a must).

Tips:

  • To make a casual skirt work appropriate wear it with a pencil skirt—make that pencil skirt ponte for added comfort and ease (for more see dressy ponte pencil and work ponte pencil)
  • For a casual work look, you don’t have to tuck your shirt in—consider tying it in a knot at your waist for something a bit different (and that emphasizes your waist)
    • Just make sure you are appropriately covered and are not showing belly or too much chest for work (think professional, not teen girl in the summer)
  • To up the professionalism, go for a single strong neutrals, like navy, for your skirt and cami
    • The navy works especially well with the Bardot because it matches the navy embroidery, creating consistency and looking more put together
    • Navy is also very in right now, so it makes you look on-trend
    • See more about wearing navy in general and to work
  • Consider a nice pop of color in your accessories, jewelry, or shoes, such as red wedges
  • Otherwise, go with simple neutral jewelry to keep it professional, or if your work environment favors casual or creative, add more color and pop with your accessories
  • Consider rolling your sleeves for a modern, getting-down-to-business look

Play Day Saturday are clothes for taking your kids to the park, running errands, talking your dog for a walk, shopping, picnicking, traveling, going to a museum or a zoo—out and about or home having fun clothes. These are the clothes you often live the best parts of your life in! The POW (Piece of the Week) the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt. Casual, easy, boho cute is the theme of this outfit. Know what is easier than jeans? Pull-on pants! No need to wiggle, zip, and button—you just pull them on! Add a pretty white blouse with hand crochet trim and handmade natural stone jewelry and you have a wonderful easy, earthy boho vibe with some Southwester flair! I see this as great for the park, a day of flea markets and antiquing, or anything where easy, flowly comfort and style is best.

Tips:

  • When going casual and comfortable think outside the jeans box and reach for the flowy pull-on pants that are trendy right now (if you don’t like this style, consider a more modern version with a tapered leg and graphic print, such as the Strand pant)
  • For a cooler, even more casual look, roll your sleeves above your elbows
  • Layer natural stone, handmade jewelry for an unique, earthy, boho touch
  • Wear your denim shirt unbuttoned as a fun layer that can work to add style and a touch of warmth
  • Find pieces with interesting details, like embroidery, natural stones, and hand crocheted lace, to make your casual outfit distinctive

Bardot POW: Trendy Denim-on-Denim Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: When wearing denim on denim focus on pieces in different washes, weights, styles, and features for an on-trend, fun look

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt. I should probably just rename “TTT Thursday” “Trendy Thursday” because I seem to focus on the trends! I’m doing that again this time. I’ve mentioned the denim-on-denim (or double denim) trend in a few previous posts (here, here, and most recently here), but this time I am going to focus on it, in this trendy denim-on-denim outfit!

Honestly, denim on denim is not a look I thought I would try, at least not with multiple blue denims. Maybe with some other colors. But, this shirt makes it easy and even fun for me to follow this trend. The faded denim is easy to pair with jeans in anything but lighter faded colors—so anything with a medium to dark wash. Plus, the darker embroidery can complement a darker jeans, creating a more put-together look.

Tips:

When wearing blue denim on blue denim, keep a few tips in mind to rock the trend:

  • Choose denims in different washes or shades, such as a lighter and darker wash
  • Look for denims of different weights to provide nice contrast
  • Distressed or destructed jeans make a good bottom because the rips add some difference and contrast
  • Wear the lighter color on the body parts you most want to draw attention to and the darker on the body part you most want to slim or hide
  • Choose denim pieces with special features, such as the embroidery or the rips
  • Pair light chambray-style shirts with jeans for an easy “denim-on-denim” look because the fabrics are actually a bit different, giving you automatic differences in weight and color
  • Pop a red lip for some added fun
  • There are so many ways you can wear a denim or chambray shirt—I show it hear with a front tuck, a half tuck, and untucked and they each give a slightly different feel
  • When accessorizing:
    • Play up the feel of the denim with southwestern pieces (this especially works with the southwestern vibe of this shirt, but the denim-on-denim look often has at least a little of that vibe)
    • Play off the blue by adding more with your accessories
    • Or go for contrasts—choose accessories that are opposite the feel of the outfit (perhaps dressy accessories) or in strong non-blue colors (like orange)
    •
    • Consider a statement necklace—the blue on blue outfit will make the necklace pop even more

Bardot POW: Vibrant, Fun, Playing-in-the-Dirt Contrasts Tuesday

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix up the jean, tee, and shirt look by wearing bright colored jeans and a denim shirt for a fun, casual, vibrant look

No place like Tuesday outfits are casual, comfy clothes for working from home, working at home, parenting (at home), and anything else where comfort is key and you are home. Although they will work for errands and anything else casual. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt. What is more casual and comfortable than jeans, a tee, and a shirt thrown over? Not much. But, why be plain and boring and wear your blue denim on bottom? Why not wear it on top? And why make those jeans blue all the time? Change it up with some on-trend color. With a few simple touches you can take a super casual, go-to look and make it interesting and trendy. Mom bun is optional!

A denim shirt is inherently casual. As such, it is the perfect layer to a casual outfit. It is easy to throw on over almost any casual outfit. It is the perfect match for this bright, fun, and casual outfit.

Tips:

  • To change up your jeans and a tee look, go for some of the on-trend colored jeans, such as these bright citron ones
  • Play off the expected blue denim on bottom by wearing your blue denim on top, through a denim shirt
  • Wear contrasting colors to create a more vibrant and dynamic look that will stand out—this may cheer you up and put some vigor in your step
  • Up the playfulness of your look with fun jewelry, such as this gold measuring tape necklace and moon earrings
  • Pull out one of the secondary colors in your outfit with your shoes (ballet flats are great for casual days!)
  • For an added casual air, roll those jeans up, but don’t worry if it is a messier roll
