Beyond POW: Faux Fur and Real Curves Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: To rock a faux fur, focus on neutral and natural pieces that emphasize your curves

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Beyond Tee from cabi Fall 2016. This POW we are going for Trendy and Terrific. The faux fur vest is a very on trend statement fur and such a cozy fun option for fall. The utility pant is also on tread, and, of course, cutie booties are!

One of the terrific things about this outfit is the mix of neutrals—cream, acorn, brown, and jade. This creates a calm feel, while popping the luxury of the faux fur vest. The draping adds a feminine feel without being overly girly.

Beyond Tee Styling Technique: Draped Curves

To rock the “Draped Curves” technique:

  1. Put it on the normal way with the tag in back
  2. Take each panel and wrap it around your side to the back, with right panel going to the right and left to the left
  3. Cross the panels in back, pulling the right one to the left and left one to the right
  4. Bring the panels around to the front
    1. Keep the panels at waist level
    2. Keep the panels smoother, not gathered
    3. Check your wrap—the left panels should now be coming around your right side and the right panel around your left side
  5. Take the top corner of the bottom of each panel and tie in a knot at your natural waist
  6. Let the bottom corners hang down, creating a fun draped look that will emphasize curves while hiding the tummy

Tips:

  • When rocking a flashy faux fur vest, mix is with calm neutrals to put the emphasis on the soft fur
  • The faux fur vest doesn’t require longer sleeves, feel free to combine it with sleeveless or short sleeved tops before it get too chilly—this will also extend how long you can wear it
  • Look for tops that emphasize your waist, especially when layered under a bulky open vest—this will show you have curves under the fur
  • If your booties and the hem of your pants are not getting along, consider rolling the pants above the bootie: this will show off the botties and not lead to the awkward pants bunching above the bootie
  • To keep the outfit more casual, go for simpler accessories with the faux fur vest—otherwise it can get loud quickly (which can be good too, but is less casual)
  • If you do not already have them, consider adding a utility style pants to your wardrobe—they are versatile, on-trend, and practical
  • Choose a stone or other natural element (such as wood or leather) to any accessories with the faux fur—this works with the faux fur to create a natural look

Pleated Star POW: Pretty Terrific Geek Chic Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix a pretty skirt with geek pieces for and edgy, feminine geek chic look!

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End. For this Thursday, we are going with Terrific, in the form of another Geek Chic outfit. Geek Chic is the perfect forum to dress down a pretty pleated skirt or other fancy skirt. Take the pretty skirt and add a fun geek tee or tank and geeky accessories. Then throw on some comfortable shoes. This look can be incredibly versatile—the skirt can be pleated, like this, or tulle, a fun pencil, or something else. I’ll illustrate this in a later post.

I especially love the mix of pretty skirts with geeky tops, when you take something with a bit of an edge, like this Holtzmann tank (Holtzmann is brilliant, strange, mad scientist engineer of the Ghostbusters in the Summer 2016 remake). The combination of edge, feminine, and geeky is interesting, unexpected, and so much fun! I think Holtzmann is the perfect choice for this outfit. While we do not see her in pleated skirts (or skirts) in the movie, she has a vintage, mad scientist style. I could see her rocking a vintage pleated skirt with work boots, a graphic tee, a leather jacket, funky socks, some cool glasses, and, of course, the Screw U necklace (which I am also wearing).

Tips:

  • Don’t be afraid to show your geek with a fun graphic tee or tank and some accessories
  • But think outside the normal jeans and a geek tee box—mix the geek with chic for an exciting twist on both
  • Mix pretty and soft with your edgy or geeky for a fun contrast and enjoyable way to wear both
  • When you have two louder accessories, like the Screw U necklace and Periodic Table cuff, keep other accessories simple
  • Rock a comfortable sneaker in a pretty color with your fancy skirts for comfort and some street style, plus this will allow you to wear the skirt in a wider variety of situations
  • A muted pastel shoe can work as a neutral, especially with a mix of printed pieces
  • Have fun—the pretty skirt doesn’t have to just be styled pretty and the geeky doesn’t have to only be geeky, but mixing works best if you have fun with it

Destructed White: It’s Terrific Being Green Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix solid colors and play brights off white for pop of polished fun!

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. This week I focus on two—trendy and terrific. Bright colors are a trend and this jellybean green is certainly bright! Paired with these white jeans it even pops more. I added a few more trends—nautical navy stripes, denim-on-denim, and eyelets—all things that are very in. But, the real reason I choose this outfit is I love the top and blazer—the colors and style of both is fabulous. I wanted to show them off, and what better way than with two neutrals—a white and a navy?

The jacket was one of the first items I bought from cabi this season. I adore it. It’s a great lighter summer weight, but heavy enough it could work year round (at least in Georgia). The sleeves roll up nicely for the modern look. And it has these great bow details on the pockets (check it out on the cabi site, none of my pictures do it justice). Every time I wear this jacket I get multiple compliments.

The eyelet blouse is also a great piece. I love eyelets to begin with. But I really like how the eyelet pattern here is more modern and not the more feminine patterns I normally see—it’s almost a puzzle type of pattern. I also love the wide, forgiving shape of it. The wider straps are also nice—they easily cover bra straps, making this a great layering piece.

I combined them both with some favorite pieces—this fun bug necklace; my preppy, nautical stripe clutch; and these great espadrille wedges; plus, of course, these edgy jeans! The result is a fun, surprising, and very “me” outfit.

Tips:

  • Play bright colors off white jeans to give the colors even more pop
  • For a different, yet together & polished look, try mixing solids colors or very large patterns (like the striped clutch)
  • Want compliments? Wear great pieces you love
  • Don’t be afraid to dress in bright colors and a couple of neutrals—you do not need patterns to have fun with color
  • When creating outfits that are very “you” look for favorite pieces and see if they work—don’t be afraid to experiment (at the very least you will probably love it)
  • Look for pieces with unique features and details—like the box pockets and eyelet pattern—for a distinctive look that will draw attention and make you feel like a million bucks
  • When your outfit is a mix of solid colors, consider adding a fun statement necklace to add visual interest
  • I’ve said it before, and will say it again—consider rolling the sleeves on your jackets for a modern touch (and it keeps you a bit cooler in the summer heat)

Bardot POW: Trendy Denim-on-Denim Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: When wearing denim on denim focus on pieces in different washes, weights, styles, and features for an on-trend, fun look

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt. I should probably just rename “TTT Thursday” “Trendy Thursday” because I seem to focus on the trends! I’m doing that again this time. I’ve mentioned the denim-on-denim (or double denim) trend in a few previous posts (here, here, and most recently here), but this time I am going to focus on it, in this trendy denim-on-denim outfit!

Honestly, denim on denim is not a look I thought I would try, at least not with multiple blue denims. Maybe with some other colors. But, this shirt makes it easy and even fun for me to follow this trend. The faded denim is easy to pair with jeans in anything but lighter faded colors—so anything with a medium to dark wash. Plus, the darker embroidery can complement a darker jeans, creating a more put-together look.

Tips:

When wearing blue denim on blue denim, keep a few tips in mind to rock the trend:

  • Choose denims in different washes or shades, such as a lighter and darker wash
  • Look for denims of different weights to provide nice contrast
  • Distressed or destructed jeans make a good bottom because the rips add some difference and contrast
  • Wear the lighter color on the body parts you most want to draw attention to and the darker on the body part you most want to slim or hide
  • Choose denim pieces with special features, such as the embroidery or the rips
  • Pair light chambray-style shirts with jeans for an easy “denim-on-denim” look because the fabrics are actually a bit different, giving you automatic differences in weight and color
  • Pop a red lip for some added fun
  • There are so many ways you can wear a denim or chambray shirt—I show it hear with a front tuck, a half tuck, and untucked and they each give a slightly different feel
  • When accessorizing:
    • Play up the feel of the denim with southwestern pieces (this especially works with the southwestern vibe of this shirt, but the denim-on-denim look often has at least a little of that vibe)
    • Play off the blue by adding more with your accessories
    • Or go for contrasts—choose accessories that are opposite the feel of the outfit (perhaps dressy accessories) or in strong non-blue colors (like orange)
    •
    • Consider a statement necklace—the blue on blue outfit will make the necklace pop even more

Margherita POW: Trendy Terrific Print Play Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix prints in the same color family with a pop of a contrasting color/print for a lighthearted trendy outfit

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Margherita Dress. This POW we are focusing on Trendy! Prints are classic, of course, but very in right now, and mixed prints are quite on-trend. Mixing prints can be scary, but it doesn’t need to be. It can also be very fun—it adds a fresh and exciting flair. This outfit is a mix of four different prints, and is a fun, lighthearted, and a pleasure to wear.

Tips:

When mixing prints:

  • Keep your colors in the same limited color family—here I focus on whites, navy, and black (but don’t be afraid to pop a small piece in another color)
  • Consider your stripes (or leopard print) to be a neutral, as I did here with the square dots stripe pattern
  • Work with similar types of prints: the dress and jacket both have geometric prints of lines and shapes that are square or square-like
  • Mix fabric textures and styling, such as a flowy dress and structured jacket
  • Choose a print of neutral for one of the main prints, as shown with the jacket
  • Play with size—the stripes on the skirt are large (with small elements) while the jacket has a small sprint and the scarf has a larger print with a lot of white space
  • Match one color—as I did with the navy in the dress, scarf, and clutch
  • Be adventurous and have fun with it, you may be surprised what actually works together (this outfit was exactly that—I tried the prints together and loved them)
  • When wearing an outfit of prints, consider popping one accessory in a bold color or bold and different print
  • Match your shoes to the dominate color to go easier on the eye or make this another area of print play!

Run Around POW: The Chic Geek Superhero Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement:  Defeat boring outfits by mixing the chic with subtle geek and save the day!

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Run Around Skirt. I'm going for Trendy & Terrific today! With this I bring you our second installment of the Geek Chic series. This is such a fun outfit! Not only is it light-hearted and geeky, but it is on-trend and flattering. And, don’t forget comfortable! Plus, what is this skirt if not a skirt with a cape?!

The geek in this is subtle. You may not realize at first that the scarf is a Marvel comics Avengers scarf or that the earrings are bows & arrows. You may just see a cute outfit. In some ways, I think this makes the geek more fun. Not everyone will get it.

The chic part is easy to see and easy to put together. Take this trendy black skirt and mix it with a double trend top—cropped and stripes! Plus, some very fashionable strappy shoes and **POW**—a simple, chic, flattering look. You can just wear the skirt and top if you want. Or you can add the geek and have an adventure. This is the perfect look to go see one of those many upcoming Marvel movies and be able to go out for drinks later and look chic!

Tips:

  • Start with a simple chic outfit and add the geek through accessories
  • Don’t be afraid to mix prints—this is very in right now, so the scarf with stripes is both fun and in!
  • Wearing a striped shirt? See if you can repeat the pattern with shoes or accessories to look more together
  • Going to go save the day? In a skirt? Look for an action-friendly skirt that keeps you covered, like this multi layered one
  • A geeky scarf is a perfect way to add some geek in a more subtle way (Think Geek has plenty)
  • If you are a geek, don’t be afraid of trendy figure flattering (and hugging) mundane clothes—wave your style flag
  • If you are stylish, don’t be afraid of adding subtle geek elements—wave your geek flag (or wear it around your neck)

Plume POW: The Stylish Safari Princess Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement:  For a trendy outfit with masculine and feminist touches, mix tulle and military/safari style

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Plume Top. I had so much fun with this one. It hits two of the Ts—Trendy and Terrific. Let’s start with trendy. Tulle skirts are very trendy right now (and let’s face it, pretty terrific too!). The military-style vest is back on the trendy list too! The elegance and sex appeal of the D’Orsay shoe is also in right now. The shell statement necklace follows the statement necklace trend and even reflects the Pantone colors of the year—Serenity and Rose Quartz. The ring also has rose quartz as a main color. The belt in either styling is on-tend. Leopard print is so in right now and the skinny belt is a darker rose quartz color. In addition, the mixing of feminine (tulle skirt, colors, D’Orsay shoes, top pattern) with the more masculine and tough (vest) is very trendy right now and always terrific! All of these pieces are terrific, but I especially love the skirt, vest, top, and necklace… and shoes, and ring! I can’t decide, they really are all terrific. Together, this makes for one very trendy and very terrific outfit.

Did you notice the two belts? I like them both and felt they each give the outfit a different feel. The skinny, pink, metallic belt colors with the colors of the outfit and adds to the femininity. The leopard print contrasts more with the colors and thus pops. It also goes more with the military/safari vest, moving the outfit into a more adventurous and fun direction. The wider width and popping colors draw more attention to the waist and create more of a waist and hourglass shape. They both work and are great ways to finish the outfit. Which do you prefer?

Tips:

  • If you want to try the tulle skirt trend but don’t want to look too “princess” or fancy, dress it down with casual pieces, such a tee shirt and military style vests— or consider contrasting it with more masculine pieces (like the military style vest)
  • When going with bold, trendy, statement pieces, accessorize in a single, more neutral color that supports the outfit and doesn’t compete (although the accessories can still be statement pieces, like this necklace, shoes, and ring)—you can even choose one that matches one of the outfit pieces like I did here with silver/gray
  • But, you can still pop one accessory like the leopard print belt—look for something eye catching, but also in a neutral (and yes, oddly enough, leopard print can be a neutral!)
  • Some military or safari style vests don’t have strong waists and can give a bulky look—to beat this add your own belt (wider belts work best, to a point) in a color that pops from the outfit may appear to give you more of a waist and hourglass shape
  • Try out alternatives—such as different belts—to see what works best for your mood or style
  • Don’t be afraid to have fun with your outfits

Go-To POW: The Versatile Blackout Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement:  For a trendy yet classic versatile look, choose black pieces with a twist

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Go-To Trouser. In many ways this POW outfit is all three Ts—Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific.

First, Trendy: Black is very on-trend for this spring and summer. In fact, cabi is calling the trend “summer blackout.” And you get “bonus points” for patterns and floral! The trend is black on black with those florals or patterns mixed in. In the dog-dog days of summer we may not follow this trend as much, when it feels too hot to wear black, but it is a great trend to follow in these cooler times. Plus, black is sophisticated, classic, slimming, and can seem a bit dressier than the same garment in another color. It’s a great trend to wear now, as shown!

Second, Transitional: This is also a good transitional outfit for two main reasons. Black tends to be more associated with the colder months, so it works well for that. But, with the summer blackout trend, it springs well into spring and summer. Plus the cardigan is a wonderful transitional layering pieces—light, but adds a layer of warmth. Perfect for those spring days that are not warm enough for short sleeves or that cool off at night.

Third, Terrific: This outfit is composed of some of my favorite cabi Spring 2016 pieces. The Go-To Trouser is amazing—comfortable, classic, and practical. The Tivoli Top is a best seller this season, and for good reasons. It is flattering, trendy, and unique. The taupe and ivory with black is a nice twist on the higher contrast white and black zebra print we often see. The flow of the top also masks any tummy issues. The relaxed Sorrento Cardigan is a wonderful layer. The knit is lovely and it has side slits for flow and movement. The oversized pockets provides a subtle mixed media look by being woven, not knit. I wasn’t sure about this cardigan, but once I tried it on, I was in love!

All three pieces are terrific—plus great accessories and shoes! So, this outfit is are Trendy, Transitional, and Terrific! Plus, it can work for a business casual work environment, a day at the playground, checking out a museum or the latest flick—this outfit is versatile!

Tips:

  • For a versatile outfit you can work or play in, look for classic pieces with a twist (such as shorter pants and a mixed media cardigans)
  • Do play with the “summer blackout” trend, but if black washes you out, put colors near your face, such as a scarf or shirt
  • When wearing various black garments, make sure they are of different types of fabric, this will give a more mixed media look, rather than the appearance that one of your black garments is faded
  • If you do the summer blackout look with a print or floral, pull out that color with your accessories for a more polished look
  • With shorter cropped pants you can still create a long, lean look by wearing heels in the same color as your pants (repeated from Go-To POW: Manic Black & White Monday)

Michelle POW: The Cropped & Contrasted Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: Don’t rule out a trend before you try it on

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. Whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Michelle Cardigan. I’m going more for trends this week. This outfit employs a few trends. First the crop top. Perhaps, like me, you shuttered when crop tops came back in, know that it was not a look for your body now. I was shocked when I tried this cabi Crop Top on. It’s longer than many, but still has the cropped silhouette and styling. It does not show off what I call my “mommy tummy,” as I feared. In fact, it’s rather flattering. I do plan to wear mine with higher waited items or perhaps a cami underneath so there are not occasional flashes of skin (or worse—the mommy tummy!). I’m shocked to say, I rather adore this cropped top! In fact, I think the length cuts right in the perfect spot to mask that tummy. Another trend in this outfit is mixing navy and black. This is such a fun, modern mix, which I have discussed previously. The navy and cobalt cardigan really add a pop of color to the outfit and cut the starkness of just black and white. It’s a pretty & fun layer over to other fun pieces. Stripes are also very in. These add a slight twist by being diagonal. And, yes, another m’legging sighting. These seem my go-to TTT Thursday pants! But that is because they are trendy, comfortable, and flattering. Really, if you don’t own a pair, go out and buy these. Trust me. You will wear them Thursday and the rest of the week!

Tips:

  • Don’t rule out a crop top, even if you are not skinny and don’t think you have the best tummy area! Just look for one in a flattering style for your body type. You may find the line of the top work perfectly to hide (not flaunt) your problem area
  • Wear navy and black together—this is a modern, trendy look, with a classic history (very French)
  • Add a navy cardigan to a black and white outfit to tone down the starkness of the black and white and add an unusual pop of color
  • Don’t be afraid for mixing different styles, like this bold and almost edgy crop top with the classic and elegant cardigan with chiffon. This mix is fun and more interesting that an outfit composed of the same style of piece.
  • Buy thee m’leggings and thank me later
  • With a neutrals only outfit, wear bright, fun jewelry that pops

  • Cardigan: Michelle Cardigan from cabi Spring 2016
  • Crop Top: Crop Top from cabi Spring 2016
  • M’Leggings (the leggings with a skirt): Mesh M’Leggings  from cabi Spring 2016
  • Necklaces: Helios Necklaces (a pair sold together) from cabi Spring 2016
  • Bracelet: Helios Bracelet from cabi Spring 2016
  • Earrings: Stone Twilight Earrings from cabi Spring 2015, and no longer available. Consider these alternatives, which also work with a white, black, and navy outfit:
  • Booties: These are old Aerosoles. Here are some current ones that could work:
    • Sundae: The black wedge boots have an elastic cross strap
    • Soterday Night: These Oxford-style ankle boots are also wedges
    • Duble Trouble: These low heeled (1”) ankle boots that look like you could keep up with twins wearing them

Plaid POW: The Trendiest Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: Don’t be afraid to mix trends

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. Whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, or something else. This week I went with all the trends! The POW (Piece of the Week) is the L.L. Bean Slightly Fitted Scotch Plaid Shirt in Deep Evergreen Tartan. Honestly, flannel is so in right now that just wearing flannel makes it trendy. But, why stop there? Just add fur! Not enough? How about the short skirt over leggings look? And then a wrist party and statement necklace? BAM. You have trends! But the nice thing about this is while these are all trends, they also all have a touch of the classic and of the normal. Flannel may be trendy, but it’s also a favorite of those in cold climes. Plus, those of us who did the alternative thing in the 1990s remember this classic fondly (I hope) or at least with some amusement. I love that flannel is back. Cozy trends are my favorite! Fur is always a classic. Now this shaggy version may not be a classic sleek version, but it still speaks to something humans have been wearing for a very long time. The black color makes it more versatile and not as “in your face” as some of the fur in clearly faux colors. The skirt over leggings trend is interesting, because it really just looks like a skirt with very opaque tights. But it has the comfort of leggings (much better than tights in my book) and means you don’t have to worry about flashing the world when playing with your kid. Statement necklaces come and go, but certainly have a history (think Ancient Egyptians, for instance). Same with arm parties, although that name is new. So, the trick here is to mix trends but go for those with a rich history and grab versions that are not too over-the-top for a multi-trend look that works on all ages. This outfit is fun and trendy, but it doesn’t hit you over the head with it. You could wear it out to some hip hotspot or to run errands without getting odd looks in either place. Now how often can you say that about an outfit? Also, it’s wicked cozy. I was out in slightly above freezing temps to take these pictures (note how bundled up my kid is) and I was quite warm. And I don’t think that was all hot flashes.

Tips:

  • When mixing trends:
    • Choose trends that are at least somewhat established and/or have a rich history
    • Select trendy items that are not too over-the-top or at the far reaches of the trend
  • Choose one garment that pops for color and keep the rest neutral (and ideally the same neutral
  • Work with trends you are comfortable in—if you are not sure about the trend or garment the mixing and wearing may be awkward
  • Start with a key trend and build from there with trends that “go” or can “go” with your clever styling (for me it is the POW flannel)
  • Don’t be afraid to mix casual and dressier trends, they can play off each other nicely and calm each other down just enough

It may be something very trendy, transitional, or something else. This week I went with cute, classy, and trendy. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi fall 2015 Love Blouse. This outfit could easily work for a date night or a night out with the girls. I see a Valentine's day celebration, fancy drinks, gallery openings, dinner with friends, a weeknight celebrations, and theater in this outfit’s future (and it's great for standing in a driveway with the family’s chalk art!). This outfit is a fun mix of pretty and sweet with sleek and stylish. I love it! The trick is to not go too far with either the sleek & stylish or the pretty & sweet. The romantic Love Blouse, the pretty lace top, the vintage bead clutch, and the darling rose quartz earrings all add a pretty and even vintage feel. But add skinnies with rolled hems and sleek sexy shoes and you have a balanced fresh look. The neutral navy in the blouse, lace top, and jeans also pulls the look together with a more modern feel and tones down the sweet pieces so this is not sugary sweet. The mix of gold, a pewter, and silver in the earrings give it a chic touch that is not too matchy-matchy.

Tips:

  • Pair romantic, vintage-inspired (or vintage) pieces with sleek modern pieces for a look stands out (and doesn’t go overboard in either direction)

  • Draw the outfit together with a darker neutral theme—this will tone down any sticky sweetness and provide a modern feel

  • Roll those jean hems to show off sexy shoes

  • Accessorizing with different metals adds a chic touch and compliments (and updates) the vintage pieces

  • Consider a side ponytail when you want both sleek and free (this works especially well with waves and curls)

  • When you have clothing that has its own “built in” accessories—like the ruffles collar on the Love Blouse or the lace of the lace top, you do not need to add a necklace, as it could distract. But have fun with things further away from these built in accessories, like a clutch or purse and shoes.

Outfit Breakdown:

The clothing items in this outfit are all cabi Fall 2015, and no longer available. Contact me if you must have something and I may be able to direct you to a stylist who has it. Look for substitutes from your own closet or check out the alternatives below. I normally will make the POW a currently available item, but my blog launched later than planned and I wanted to share these outfits. The next POW will be of an available item, I promise!

  • Blouse: This is the cabi Fall 2015 Love Blouse. To find a substitute from your own closet, look for a feminine blouse with a special feature. If you don’t have quite the right blouse to substitute in your closet, consider these cabi Spring 2016 alternatives:
    • Vita Blouse: This gorgeous draped blouse is also sleeveless and has a sexy cutout in the back
    • Bella Top: This feminize, fluttery blouse has a similar feel to the love blouse
    • Positano Top: This flowy top reminds me of vintage fabric but with very current colors
    • Gemma Top: This bright green beauty has eyelets and lace for a vintage and trendy feel
  • Jeans: Skinny jeans are everywhere. If you don’t already have some dark skinny jeans, I’m sure you can find some you will love. If you want something a bit less skinny (and white), consider the Slimmie.
  • Lace Top: The London Top is, yup, a cabi Fall 2015 item and no longer for sale. Here are some different directions you can go:
    • Capri Top: With crochet ivory lace in a flowing oversized design, you get a vintage bohemian feel. Consider wearing a bright cami or tank underneath to pop color and add some pizazz, such as the Tiger Lily Layer Tank or either V-Neck Cami
    • Piccolo Shrug: This bright, cropped shrug has a 60s feel
    • Portico Shrug: Another bright shrug, this has more of a modern feel with dolman sleeve and an open design
  • Earrings: These are Rose Quartz Dangle Earrings by Shine Chaser Jewelry
  • Clutch: This is a vintage clutch (I’m guessing from the 1950s or 1960s) that my mom bought me for Christmas. I’ll put the shop name in where she got it when she gets back to me.
  • Shoes: These lovely gray and pewter pumps are the Audrey Brooke Glenda Pump, which I recently got for a steal (under$20) at DSW, but are showing as $39.94 online

For a spring version with currently available pieces, consider: cabi’s2016 Spring Bella Top, Slimmie jeans, and Piccolo Shrug, with the Audrey Brooke Glenda Pump, Rose Quartz Dangle Earrings, and a vintage clutch.

An added bonus. Y'all want to see pictures of my adorable kid, right?

POW Thursday Edition Week 1b: Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific Dealer’s Choice

Outfit Mission Statement: Consider mixing versatile, life-style friendly pieces with a nice jacket for a fun outfit that can work for you

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It is whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, or something else. This week I went with comfy, trendy, and fun. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi fall 2015 Media Jacket. To make it even trendier I added two key pieces: the over-the-knee boots and the skirt/legging combo. The best thing about both of these pieces are their toddler-friendly nature! I love the skirt/legging combo because I can get down on the floor and play with my kid, without flashing the world. The boots have only a slight heel, so they are comfy and easy to chase kids in. The skirt/leggings combo also has the advantage of covering your butt, so you do not need to wear a longer shirt or tunic over your leggings. You can through these on and whatever top you want. I tend to wear longer tops with them for two reasons: one, it still hugs my butt pretty closely and two, I like the layered look of a long top, over the short skirt, as you can see here (maybe, since they are both black it can be hard). The shirt here is a long sleeve tunic length tee shirt. I kept black on black to make the jacket pop more, but you can have fun with colors here to show off the tunic and skirt layers. I also added a bit of bling with the necklace, but you can tone this down for a more casual look. While the rest of the days of the week have clear places/time to wear the outfits, the TTT Thursday outfits will vary. This outfit can work for a range of occasions from a date to dressing up for the playground. I think it works well when you want to look good, but be comfortable, such as shopping, going to a museum, walking around an art fair, antiquing, going to the zoo with the kids, and brunch on a busy day.

Tips:

  • Consider (if you have not already) adding this versatile skirt/leggings combo (cabi calls these M’leggings) to your wardrobe; they work great for anything leggings do, but have the added stylish touch of the skirt (without the impracticality); they also allow you to wear leggings without a tunic or longer shirt!
  • Look for trendy pieces that work for your lifestyle, like flat or low-heeled boots if you run around a lot
  • Add a flashy necklace to up the dressiness of the outfit—remove it or put on a less flashy one to increase the casualness
