Pleated Star POW: Beachy Warrior Goddess Date Night

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix tough with feminine and goddess accessories for a beachy warrior goddess date night look

Friday Night Drinks POW outfits are for going out on a date, getting drinks, seeing a band play, going to dinner and a movie—something where you want to look good and may wear some sexier clothes and statement pieces. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End. This is a fun way to dress down the skirt, for a funky date night look. Instead of taking the pretty, feminine flow of the skirt, and adding to it with other pretty and feminine things, I add strong, dark pieces for a bold, edgier look.  While this is a more summery outfit, you can get the same tough feel by adding a moto jacket over the muscle tee, which will also show off some crazy curves, and maybe switching out the sandals for some boots. Like some other date night outfits, this one is a fun mix of contrasts, while maintaining a feminine feel. This one is great for a seaside date of casual fine dining and a walk or the beach. But could work for anything where you want to be comfortable, and don’t need t be too casual or too dressy. I love the added touch of feminine strength with the Athena necklace. Not only does it go nicely with the gladiator-style sandals, but it adds to the tough and feminine feel of the outfit—perhaps Athena would wear this for a date?

Tips:

  • Dress down a pretty, feminine skirt with strong, dark pieces like a muscle tee and gladiator sandal for a warrior goddess tough & feminine date night look
  • Black adds sex appeal generally (thus the LBD), and especially in this outfit
  • Add toughness to an outfit with a muscle tee or other edgy tee or tank and gladiator-style sandals for warm weather or a moto jacket and moto boots for cooler weather (or some mix for fall!)
  • Tie longer tees/tanks at the waist to create more of an hourglass shape by emphasize the waist; it can also add flair and hide the belly
  • Accessorize with handmade jewelry for a one-of-a-kind look that likely supports small business or individuals
  • Wear a striking ring on your index or middle finger for a more striking and eye-catching look with attitude

Pleated Star POW: Nautical On-trend Librarian Manic Monday

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix a casual, graphic tank with a pretty skirt and classic cardigan for Manic Monday outfit

Manic Monday outfits are easy career clothes to throw on for manic Mondays. This Monday we focus on creating an easy, pretty and on-trend work outfit. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End. I think cardigans are perfect layers for easy Monday (or easy any day) career looks. They are likely more comfortable than a jacket and more forgiving of any weekend over indulgences. Anyone who has followed this blog may be surprised to learn that cardigans are a recent wardrobe addition for me. I did not used to wear them or even like them. They seemed too kindergarten teacher or librarian to me. Or at least for me. I respected a person who could rock a cardigan. Just on me they felt.. weird… stiff… something. No idea why. But then, I was convinced to buy a cabi cardigan, and I was sold. Now I have several, mostly cabi, but occasionally, I will add a pretty one of another brand, like this Target one. They are a perfect layering pieces and can work for anyone, not just kindergarten teachers or librarians (they just were smarter than me on wearing them).

This is another great transitional outfit. It would work wonderfully for summer, but also can rock for fall. The rope tank had a nautical feel, which is on trend for this fall (not just the Spring and Summer this year!). It gives it a fun, yet classic touch. The neutral color and textured pattern, gives it a refined feel, while toning down the tank and skirt.

I styled this with handmade jewelry for a more casual, natural feel, drawing on the beauty and uniqueness of the pieces. Feel free to dress this up more with statement pieces or even some pearls for a classier feel.

Tips:

  • Never rule out a category of clothing—try it on in several styles and brands and think about if it could work for you
  • Trade out your fitted jacket for a soft cardigan for a more casual and comfortable outfit
  • Add elements of a trend, like the rope graphic, to be on-trend but not overboard (no nautical pun intended), which may work better in a casual office environment
  • When wearing eye-catching prints (rope & stars for instance) in a more conservative office environment, keep your outfit colors to a more limited and neutral-heavy palette
  • For a more casual, natural style, wear handmade jewelry featuring beautiful natural stones and gems—this may remind you of the weekend and prompt conversations
  • A flat and bare legs works well for warmer temps, but consider tights and boots when the temps cool
  • Longer hair? Don’t feel like putting it up? Consider a headband to keep it out of your face
  • Take a casual, graphic tank and pair it with a pretty skirt and classic cardigan for business casual outfit with some fun

Pleated Star POW: Cozy Layers Four Ways and a Mom Bun Tuesday

Outfit Mission Statement: Dress down your pretty skirt with casual, comfortable layers and a mom bun

No place like Tuesday outfits are casual, comfy clothes for working from home, working at home, parenting (at home), and anything else where comfort is key and you are home. Although they will work for errands and anything else casual. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End. Yes, even a pretty pleated skirt can work for a casual, easy outfit! Just add easy pieces in comfortable knits, practical shoes, and a mom bun and you have a twist on the jeans and tee you may often wear at home or running errands.

As the seasons change, it is especially important to think of layers and versatility in any of our outfits, but especially those for busy days. I love the Recess Tank and Recess Topper as an easy way to layer with style and flair. Both pieces are soft French Terry, making them perfect for casual wear. The Recess Tank is a longer, tunic-length, providing even more versatility (and you can wear it with leggings). You can easily wear them as a set—a modern take on the cami and cardigan combo—or separately. Here I illustrate several ways you can wear the two pieces with this skirt:

  1. Just the Recess Tank worn long
  2. Recess Tank only, tied at the waist to add flair and emphasize the waist (which is also good at hiding the belly)
  3. Recess Topper over the Recess Tank, with the Topper tied and hood down
  4. The Recess Topper with hood up over the Recess Tank
Just the Recess Tank worn long

Recess Tank only, tied at the waist

Recess Topper with hood up over the Recess Tank

You can also play even more with the two together or separately, such as pairing the Recess Topper with another tank, tunic, or top under it. I adore the thumb holes, but you do not have to wear them; you can just push the sleeves back a bit for a more traditional sleeve look.

Tips:

  • Transform your pretty pleated skirt into a perfect casual outfit by mixing it with casual tops and accessories
  • Look for versatile tops combinations, such as the Recess Topper and Recess Tank, for an easy way to layer and be ready for changes temperatures
  • Rethink the classic cardigan and cami with a cropped pullover and a tunic-length top for a casual, cozy take on traditional layers
  • A heather gray knit adds a casual feel to any outfit
  • With a pretty skirt and fun topper(s), no one will notice the messy mom bun
  • A bra-friendly tunic length tank, give you extra ease and versatility—allowing you to wear your favorite comfy bra and decide if you want the tunic down or tied at your waist

Destructed White POW: Soft mixed prints and rips Manic Monday

Outfit Mission Statement: Make those destructed jeans professional with a classy blazer, color colors, and a sophisticated print mix

Manic Monday outfits are easy career clothes to throw on for manic Mondays. This Monday we focus on creating a soft, pretty work outfit. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 of Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. White jeans, destructed or not, give you a nice base for highlighting soft colors and fabrics, such as the grays and yellows here in silk and a soft knit. The soft colors pop against white, especially an antique white, giving you a nice opportunity to wear those light, feminine garments. The white also is a nice base for mixing prints, as it does not compete with the prints. Of course, the destructed jeans need to be mixed with more professional pieces to make the average of the outfit appropriate for business casual. Often my Monday looks will not include jackets (I save those for the more professional Wednesday outfits), but more casual, easy pieces. But, if you are wearing destructed jeans to work, a jacket add a nice professional balance.  I went with a soft jacket that has almost a sweater texture and feel, so it is almost like a cardigan. With the soft woven jacket, silk blouse, and super soft jeans, this outfit is more comfortable than PJs, keeping an easy feel to your Manic Monday!

Tips:

  • To balance the casual edge of the destructed jeans, wear a professional jacket
  • Mix soft feminine colors with the destructed jeans to further tone them down for work
  • Use the white jeans (or pants) as a base to show off lighter, softer colors
  • When mixing prints, especially prints of the same colors, make one of your main garments a white
  • Consider the rules for mixing prints, such as differing the size of the print and fabric
  • Do consider mixing yellow and gray, especially for work—I LOVE this combo (I’m even planning to paint my kitchen in yellow and gray)
  • To keep a professional feel to the outfit, wear jewelry in the same color scheme, especially any statement pieces (such as this lovely necklace)
  • Work with a limited palette to make the overall outfit feel more professional, such as the white, grey, and yellow palette here (with some subtle gold)
  • Remember you can replace white pants or regular white jeans here for the destructed jeans for a more professional look or if your workplace does not allow ripped jeans (mine does not)

Destructed White POW: Take me out to the ballgame Tuesday

Outfit Mission Statement: For a cool, casual, and stylish outfit for a ballgame (or any occasion where cool and comfortable is key), wear layers in the colors of your favorite team

No place like Tuesday outfits are casual, comfy clothes for working from home, working at home, parenting (at home), and anything else where comfort is key and you are home. Although they will work for errands and anything else casual. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans.  While Tuesday are my comfortable, casual “outfits for home” outfits, this one is more of a comfortable, casual outfit for going out to the ballgame—whether it be pro or your daughter’s softball league. But, never fear, this outfit also works for home too! Just remember, you can be stylish and comfortable at home or the ballgame! And, of course, nothing says casual and comfortable like these jeans!

Tips:

  • When you will be outside for several hours and may face greatly changing temperatures, chose layers that look great together and on their own
    • Consider a slouchy short-sleeve or half-sleeve sweater for a comfortable top layer (this one has a touch of silk, for the home run of can be comfortable and luxurious at the same time)
    • Add a tank top that covers your bra strap for a cool bottom layer that you can wear alone when it is hot
  • For ballgame dressing, show your team spirit by rocking your team’s colors
  • If you are going to be doing a lot of sitting, feel free to wear some fun heeled sandals, like these platform wedges
  • To add visual interest, make one of your layers a pattern—this works especially well for the bottom layer that can peek below or under the top layer(s)
  • When wearing a mix of the same colors (beyond black or white), go for contrasts, such as a lighter shade and a darker one
  • To keep a casual air (and support small businesses if you buy it), wear handmade jewelry
  • For sun protection and team spirit, top the look off with a baseball hat (Yes, this is a Red Sox hat. I’m from New England and they are still my home team, even after more than ten years in Atlanta)
    • This also is a great way to hide hair that should have been washed
    • It’s also a fun way to wear a pony tail—through the hole in the back

POW 10: The White Destructed Slim Boyfriend Jean

Do you have white jeans? Do you have multiple pairs of white jeans? I must admit I was first very leery of white jeans. I am a bit of a klutz and am always getting things on me. So white jeans did not seem like a wise option. But I tried my first pair (will it shock you to learn they were cabi?) and loved them. I also didn’t spill anything on them! Now, I am a big fan. They add a fresh, summer look and work well with so many different styles of clothes. They have become a wardrobe staple for me. I’d not say they are a wardrobe essential, but certainly a staple. You don’t need them, but they will become a go-to piece perfect especially for spring and summer.

I have three pairs of white jeans now: boot cut, skinnies, and these fabulous Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans from cabi Spring 2016. I love the laid back ease with a bit of edge these have. They are slouchy loose without being baggy and are made of a very soft denim that is a pleasure to wear. The contrast stitching is a nice touch and adds to the style of the jeans. They are also an on-trend “vintage white,” which will mix beautifully with other whites. I didn’t plan to make them a POW (Piece of the Week), but Kendria Thompson of Solid Treasures Jewelry suggested them. I wasn’t sure about styling them a more formal office or special occasion. But I decided to take on the challenge. While I found ways to style them for formal offices and special occasions, they still make not be dressy enough (with the rips) to work for these two environments. However, you can easy substitute other white jeans or pants for a similar look without the destruction.

If you do not have one, please contact me in the comments or via email, reach out to my (Joni Allen via email or phone: 770 502-5243 [call or text]), or find a cabi stylist near you. If you want some white jeans, but do not like the style of these (perhaps you are not a fan of destruction in our jeans), you can find white jeans almost anywhere right now. Cabi has another pair these season, the Slimmie, which is a new silhouette that is looser than a skinny, but not a boyfriend. It’s great for those who want a slim leg but don’t like the skinny look or feel. Old Navy has many different styles of white jeans—such as the similar Boyfriend Straight Jeans, Mid-Rise Stay White Rockstar Skinny Jeans, and the Mid-Rise Curvy Straight White Jeans (plus they are having a great sale right now and an additional 30% off order over $75 online today only! Bardot POW: Ponte and Knotted Manic Monday

Outfit Mission Statement: For a comfortable, professional Monday outfit, dress up your denim shirt with a navy ponte pencil skirt

Manic Monday outfits are easy career clothes to throw on for manic Mondays. This Monday we focus on creating an professional, comfortable work outfit. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 of Bardot Shirt. The denim shirt in general, and the Bardot in particular, dress up very nicely for a casual work look. The embroidery on the Bardot gives it a special touch that works well for a casual Friday or Monday. Any casual button down shirt can be quickly and easily dressed a with a nice pencil skirt. The pencil skirt adds instant professionalism. And no one has to know if is the amazing, comfortable ponte knit (remember, I’ve suggested a ponte knit pencil skirt is a must).

Tips:

  • To make a casual skirt work appropriate wear it with a pencil skirt—make that pencil skirt ponte for added comfort and ease (for more see dressy ponte pencil and work ponte pencil)
  • For a casual work look, you don’t have to tuck your shirt in—consider tying it in a knot at your waist for something a bit different (and that emphasizes your waist)
    • Just make sure you are appropriately covered and are not showing belly or too much chest for work (think professional, not teen girl in the summer)
  • To up the professionalism, go for a single strong neutrals, like navy, for your skirt and cami
    • The navy works especially well with the Bardot because it matches the navy embroidery, creating consistency and looking more put together
    • Navy is also very in right now, so it makes you look on-trend
    • See more about wearing navy in general and to work
  • Consider a nice pop of color in your accessories, jewelry, or shoes, such as red wedges
  • Otherwise, go with simple neutral jewelry to keep it professional, or if your work environment favors casual or creative, add more color and pop with your accessories
  • Consider rolling your sleeves for a modern, getting-down-to-business look

Bardot POW: Casual, Easy Boho Saturday

Outfit Mission Statement: For a distinctive, comfy, boho chic outfit, think outside the jeans box—wear flowy pull-on pants and a denim shirt instead

Play Day Saturday are clothes for taking your kids to the park, running errands, talking your dog for a walk, shopping, picnicking, traveling, going to a museum or a zoo—out and about or home having fun clothes. These are the clothes you often live the best parts of your life in! The POW (Piece of the Week) the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt. Casual, easy, boho cute is the theme of this outfit. Know what is easier than jeans? Pull-on pants! No need to wiggle, zip, and button—you just pull them on! These flowy on-trend pull-on pants are perfect with the easy, versatile denim shirt, especially the Bardot. Together they create a flowy boho vibe. Add a pretty white blouse with hand crochet trim and handmade natural stone jewelry and you have a wonderful easy, earthy boho vibe with some Southwester flair! I see this as great for the park, a day of flea markets and antiquing, or anything where easy, flowly comfort and style is best.

Tips:

  • When going casual and comfortable think outside the jeans box and reach for the flowy pull-on pants that are trendy right now (if you don’t like this style, consider a more modern version with a tapered leg and graphic print, such as the Strand pant)
  • For a cooler, even more casual look, roll your sleeves above your elbows
  • Layer natural stone, handmade jewelry for an unique, earthy, boho touch
  • Wear your denim shirt unbuttoned as a fun layer that can work to add style and a touch of warmth
  • Find pieces with interesting details, like embroidery, natural stones, and hand crocheted lace, to make your casual outfit distinctive
  • Strappy booties can add a fun finishing touch
  • Layer your handmade necklaces by choosing a pieces with the same main color

Bardot POW: Trendy Denim-on-Denim Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement: When wearing denim on denim focus on pieces in different washes, weights, styles, and features for an on-trend, fun look

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt. I should probably just rename “TTT Thursday” “Trendy Thursday” because I seem to focus on the trends! I’m doing that again this time. I’ve mentioned the denim-on-denim (or double denim) trend in a few previous posts (here, here, and most recently here), but this time I am going to focus on it, in this trendy denim-on-denim outfit!

Honestly, denim on denim is not a look I thought I would try, at least not with multiple blue denims. Maybe with some other colors. But, this shirt makes it easy and even fun for me to follow this trend. The faded denim is easy to pair with jeans in anything but lighter faded colors—so anything with a medium to dark wash. Plus, the darker embroidery can complement a darker jeans, creating a more put-together look.

Tips:

When wearing blue denim on blue denim, keep a few tips in mind to rock the trend:

  • Choose denims in different washes or shades, such as a lighter and darker wash
  • Look for denims of different weights to provide nice contrast
  • Distressed or destructed jeans make a good bottom because the rips add some difference and contrast
  • Wear the lighter color on the body parts you most want to draw attention to and the darker on the body part you most want to slim or hide
  • Choose denim pieces with special features, such as the embroidery or the rips
  • Pair light chambray-style shirts with jeans for an easy “denim-on-denim” look because the fabrics are actually a bit different, giving you automatic differences in weight and color
  • Pop a red lip for some added fun
  • There are so many ways you can wear a denim or chambray shirt—I show it hear with a front tuck, a half tuck, and untucked and they each give a slightly different feel
  • When accessorizing:
    • Play up the feel of the denim with southwestern pieces (this especially works with the southwestern vibe of this shirt, but the denim-on-denim look often has at least a little of that vibe)
    • Play off the blue by adding more with your accessories
    • Or go for contrasts—choose accessories that are opposite the feel of the outfit (perhaps dressy accessories) or in strong non-blue colors (like orange)
    •
    • Consider a statement necklace—the blue on blue outfit will make the necklace pop even more

POW 9: The Southwestern, Boho, Boutique Staple Denim Shirt

I’ve never been a fan of the denim shirt, at least not for me. They look great on other people. They are a wardrobe staple. They are incredibly versatile—easy to dress up and down, wear as layer or wear on its own. But just not my thing.

That is, until I met the Bardot Shirt. Yes, this is another cabi Spring 2016 piece. It is also not your typical denim shirt. It is a faded blue, which you can find many a denim shirt in. But, it also has a boho, Southwest feel with lovely navy embroidery. This shirt makes me think of New Mexico or maybe Arizona. Clear blue sky, turquoise jewelry, horseback riding, red dusty ground, and that desert vibe. It also has a casual, but tailored fit and distressed silver buttons. Plus, each one is unique with the fading of the denim. My cabi stylist, Joni Allen, says this is like a boutique version of a denim shirt, and I must say I agree.

I see this shirt being what a flannel shirt is to me in the winter and late fall—a cozy shirt, a layer, something I throw on when cold or needing the lightest of jackets, something easy, practical, and worn on its own and as a quick go-to addition to nearly any outfit.

Now I’m a big fan of this denim shirt. And I may find my way to loving the more typical denim shirts. Yes, the Southwestern, boho, boutique Bardot Shirt will be my ninth POW (Piece of the Week). If you do not have the Bardot Shirt and are not interested in buying it, feel free to use any denim shirt in the styles I will show you. It will work best if the denim shirt is a bit loose so you can tie it. Otherwise, pretty much any denim shirt will work. You can also replace your denim shirt with a flannel shirt for fall and winter and try similar styles. Run Around POW: Sexy & Comfortable Date Night

Outfit Mission Statement: Be the sexiest and most comfortable woman in the room by wearing a curve-hugging, flaw-hiding all-black outfit in a soft, comfortable fabric

Friday Night Drinks POW outfits are for going out on a date, getting drinks, seeing a band play, going to dinner and a movie—something where you want to look good and may wear some sexier clothes and statement pieces. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Run Around Skirt. I’ve mentioned before that this skirt is sexy, right? Well, this skirts is very sexy. It is perfect for a date night. You can make a sexy date night outfit by simply pairing it with a pretty blouse or top. The Tivoli Top and the Vita Blouse would work to make funky or pretty date night looks that are also very sexy. I’ll let you play around with the blouse and skirt combo. Instead, let me suggest something that is even more comfortable and even sexier. Try the skirt's sister garment—theblack Gathered Tee. An all-black outfit also exudes sex appeal. That’s why the little black dress exists. It’s striking, strong, and confident. Any cute or sexy black top could work with the Run Around Skirt for a hot all-black look. But, make the items body hugging (in all the right ways) with drapes, gathers, and layers, and you have quite the hot look. While you will be the sexiest woman in the room, you will probably also be the most comfortable. After all these is a tee shirt and skirt made of the wonderfully soft and stretchy Lenzing fabric. You think your tee shirt if comfortable? Comparatively, it is not. Trust me.

With these two pieces, you really don’t need to do much else. Sure add pair of sexy heals and some nice accessories, and maybe a striking red lip to the finish this look.  But you could wear some nice sandals and also call it done.

Tips:

  • You can create slender and long illusion by dressing in a single color—black, body hugging clothes make you look even more slender, while also emphasizing curves (curvy and slender? What more do you want?)
  • Keep in mind you can be sexy and comfortable, if you choose soft fabrics that move with you, such as Lenzing (if you are not comfortable, you are probably not sexy)
  • You do not have to show a lot of skin to be sexy—this outfit is rather modest, but the color and fit are what makes it look sexy and your attitude can help!
  • If youwear two similar items (fabric and color) you can create the illusion of a dress, which seems dressier
  • When wearing such a knockout outfit you can go subtle with the accessories or you can push it even more—such as wearing sexy shoes, a stunning necklace, and a red lip
  • Are you a mom who feels guilty going out and leaving her kid(s) behind? Bring a reminder of your dears with you, such as this amazing ring by Solid Treasures which I had stamped with my son’s name. It’s a nice reminder that always makes me smile, and somehow that helps any guilt (and a guilty mom is not very sexy, nor is she having a good time)
  • Worried about problem areas? Garments that have gathering, ruching, draping, or other features in the problem are should "hide" the problems in elegant ways

Run Around POW: The Chic Geek Superhero Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement:  Defeat boring outfits by mixing the chic with subtle geek and save the day!

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Run Around Skirt. I'm going for Trendy & Terrific today! With this I bring you our second installment of the Geek Chic series. This is such a fun outfit! Not only is it light-hearted and geeky, but it is on-trend and flattering. And, don’t forget comfortable! Plus, what is this skirt if not a skirt with a cape?!

The geek in this is subtle. You may not realize at first that the scarf is a Marvel comics Avengers scarf or that the earrings are bows & arrows. You may just see a cute outfit. In some ways, I think this makes the geek more fun. Not everyone will get it.

The chic part is easy to see and easy to put together. Take this trendy black skirt and mix it with a double trend top—cropped and stripes! Plus, some very fashionable strappy shoes and **POW**—a simple, chic, flattering look. You can just wear the skirt and top if you want. Or you can add the geek and have an adventure. This is the perfect look to go see one of those many upcoming Marvel movies and be able to go out for drinks later and look chic!

Tips:

  • Start with a simple chic outfit and add the geek through accessories
  • Don’t be afraid to mix prints—this is very in right now, so the scarf with stripes is both fun and in!
  • Wearing a striped shirt? See if you can repeat the pattern with shoes or accessories to look more together
  • Going to go save the day? In a skirt? Look for an action-friendly skirt that keeps you covered, like this multi layered one
  • A geeky scarf is a perfect way to add some geek in a more subtle way (Think Geek has plenty)
  • If you are a geek, don’t be afraid of trendy figure flattering (and hugging) mundane clothes—wave your style flag
  • If you are stylish, don’t be afraid of adding subtle geek elements—wave your geek flag (or wear it around your neck)

Run Around POW: Muted, Playful Contrasts at Home Tuesday

Outfit Mission Statement: Dress down your black skirt in muted tones, with pops of fun and sunshine

No place like Tuesday outfits are casual, comfy clothes for working from home, working at home, parenting (at home), , and anything else where comfort is key and you are home. Although they will work for errands and anything else casual. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Run Around Skirt. This skirt is as easy to style down as it is to style up! There are many options to style it down. A tee shirt of any sort is instant casual and comfort! Or a cotton knit tank. Or a casual button down, like a denim shirt. Or, maybe those last two together? That’s what I went with here. A tee shirt is too easy. Plus, if you are like me, layers are great—something for cool mornings and hot afternoons.

If you really want to give this skirt (or other black skirts) a casual feel, follow my rule previously discussed in No Place Like Tuesday for Sky & Earth Explorers for dressing black bottoms: go for more muted colors not whites (or brights), such as heathered grey. I also suggest stripes, which works here too! This wonderful tank has a light heather gray stripped with yellow—a fun and casual combo (the grey acts to tone down the yellow). A denim shirt often adds a casual air, as does this faded one with amazing embroidery. Plus these four colors create some fabulous combinations—yellow and blue are a favorite combination of mine. Black and yellow always grab attention. Blue and Black are a trendy, yet classic, combination. Grey goes great with everything, but I especially love it with yellow (actually thinking of doing my kitchen in yellow and grey!). Together this make a fun, casual, interesting, and incredibly comfortable outfit for working from home or whatever casual environment you are in!

Tips:

  • Don’t be afraid of fun color combinations in casual wear, such as black and yellow or blue and yellow
  • Keep your colors more muted when going casual with black bottoms
  • But don’t be afraid of some bright elements, such as stripes, to add interest
  • Think of easy ways to incorporate layers into casual wear, especially in the spring, when temperatures vary over the day (or if you have hot flashes or other things that cause quick temperature changes)
  • Have fun with your casual jewelry, such as featuring pieces with favorite or apropos animals
  • When working with a few main colors pull each out in your jewelry
  • Look for comfortable but fun summer sandals for your casual days—ones that let you walk on walls (even if low ones)
  • Have fun with your casual outfits
  • For an added touch, find fun ways to tie your denim shirt (plus this keeps from getting in the way)

Plume POW: The Stylish Safari Princess Thursday

Outfit Mission Statement:  For a trendy outfit with masculine and feminist touches, mix tulle and military/safari style

TTT Thursday outfits are Trendy, Transitional, and/or Terrific—in other words my choice. It can be whatever other outfit ideas the garment gave me. It may be something very trendy, transitional, terrific, or something else. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Plume Top. I had so much fun with this one. It hits two of the Ts—Trendy and Terrific. Let’s start with trendy. Tulle skirts are very trendy right now (and let’s face it, pretty terrific too!). The military-style vest is back on the trendy list too! The elegance and sex appeal of the D’Orsay shoe is also in right now. The shell statement necklace follows the statement necklace trend and even reflects the Pantone colors of the year—Serenity and Rose Quartz. The ring also has rose quartz as a main color. The belt in either styling is on-tend. Leopard print is so in right now and the skinny belt is a darker rose quartz color. In addition, the mixing of feminine (tulle skirt, colors, D’Orsay shoes, top pattern) with the more masculine and tough (vest) is very trendy right now and always terrific! All of these pieces are terrific, but I especially love the skirt, vest, top, and necklace… and shoes, and ring! I can’t decide, they really are all terrific. Together, this makes for one very trendy and very terrific outfit.

Did you notice the two belts? I like them both and felt they each give the outfit a different feel. The skinny, pink, metallic belt colors with the colors of the outfit and adds to the femininity. The leopard print contrasts more with the colors and thus pops. It also goes more with the military/safari vest, moving the outfit into a more adventurous and fun direction. The wider width and popping colors draw more attention to the waist and create more of a waist and hourglass shape. They both work and are great ways to finish the outfit. Which do you prefer?

Tips:

  • If you want to try the tulle skirt trend but don’t want to look too “princess” or fancy, dress it down with casual pieces, such a tee shirt and military style vests— or consider contrasting it with more masculine pieces (like the military style vest)
  • When going with bold, trendy, statement pieces, accessorize in a single, more neutral color that supports the outfit and doesn’t compete (although the accessories can still be statement pieces, like this necklace, shoes, and ring)—you can even choose one that matches one of the outfit pieces like I did here with silver/gray
  • But, you can still pop one accessory like the leopard print belt—look for something eye catching, but also in a neutral (and yes, oddly enough, leopard print can be a neutral!)
  • Some military or safari style vests don’t have strong waists and can give a bulky look—to beat this add your own belt (wider belts work best, to a point) in a color that pops from the outfit may appear to give you more of a waist and hourglass shape
  • Try out alternatives—such as different belts—to see what works best for your mood or style
  • Don’t be afraid to have fun with your outfits

Plume POW: Manic Pretty Strong Monday

Outfit Mission Statement: Mix a military-inspired jacket with skinny jeans and a feminine top for a strong, pretty, casual, yet professional work look

Manic Monday outfits are easy career clothes to throw on for manic Mondays. This Monday we focus on creating a chic work outfit. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2106 Plume Top. While styled with the ease of a tee shirt, this blouse can easily be styled up for work. It especially works is a more casual work look with a blazer and jeans. I’m a huge fan of the blazer and jean combination anyway. Add this Plume Top and you have an amazing, casual apropos of work look! Due to all the colors in this top, you can easily pop any of them with your accessories or shoes. I felt the orange made a nice contrast to the green and was less expected than purple or magenta. This top is great for the casual office look for many reasons, but one of my favorites is layering! If you get hot, you can take the jacket off, and not worry about showing off too much (including a bra strap). Make sure you have some blouses like this in your work (and rest of life) wardrobe!

Tips:

  • For a casual work look, combine a pretty top, nice fitting blazer, and skinny jeans
  • Pop a less expected color in the blouse with your accessories or shoes for added interest and sophisticate styling
  • Roll those jeans to show off your shoes and look more put together
  • Roll the jacket cuffs for a more modern take on the classic (and keep cooler during the summer heat or a hot flash)
  • Consider playing off the safari feel of the jacket with some fun shoes
  • Contrast the femininity of the blouse with a safari- or military-styled jacket for a strong, yet pretty look that is ready for anything
  • When doing business casual, lean towards darker washed jeans, as they look more professional
  • Look for blouses that layer well and can work without layer on top for when you get hot
  • With a neutral jacket and dark wash jeans (also a neutral), you can grab any blouse for a quick, professional work outfit

Go-To POW: Denim on Top Saturday

Outfit Mission Statement: Wear your denim on top with classic black pants for a casual, fun, and modern outfit with a touch of class

Play Day Saturday are clothes for taking your kids to the park, running errands, talking your dog for a walk, shopping, picnicking, travel, going to a museum or a zoo—out and about or home having fun clothes. These are the clothes you often live the best parts of your life in! The POW (Piece of the Week) the cabi Spring 2016 Go-To Trouser. This outfit makes me want to go to a fair or antiquing. It’s fun, comfortable, and stylish. Plus the layers help for regulating your temperature in cool antique shops and warm fairs. The classic yet modern black pants work well with the cropped styling for more casual dressing, while maintaining just a bit of sophistication. The denim shirt adds to the casualness of the outfit, but the funky embroidery gives it a classier take on the typical denim shirt. The pops of color in the shoes, scarf, and tank top add a bit of fun and even whimsy to the outfit. Together you have an overall fun, casual, and modern outfit with a touch of class.

Tips:

  • Twist up the "denim as usual" casual look by wearing a denim shirt and not jeans—still casual, but with more stand-out style
  • When working the denim and a neutral add pops of color to liven up the outfit
  • The popular layering of necklaces works beautifully for a scarf and a necklace—just make sure one is longer and they are not competing for the same space
  • Denim shirts scan be worn in many ways, which is part of the beauty of them:
    • Tying your denim shirt, as shown, adds a bit of flirty fun and emphasizes your waist (works better with slightly oversized or oversized shirts)
    • Wearing it open creates a more casual take on this outfit (works best with slightly oversized or oversized shirts)
    • Tucking it and buttoning it is a slightly more polished look (works best with a true-to-size shirt)
