Pencil Skirt POW: Trendy, Elegant, and all Choked up Date Night

Outfit Mission Statement: Look good coming and going in a classic, feminine pencil skirt and a trendy, elegant lace back blouse

Friday Night Drinks POW outfits are for going out on a date, getting drinks, seeing a band play, going to dinner and a movie—something where you want to look good and may wear some sexier clothes and statement pieces. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the pencil skirt in general, and the cabi Fall 2016 Sigourney skirt in particular. The pencil skirt is a perfect date night option. It’s sexy, chic, classic, and feminine all in one. Given the power of the pencil skirt, you have a lot of options to finish the date night look, from a tee shirt to an elegant silk blouse. In fact, you can even wear flannel and look hot! Here I went with a trendy, yet elegant option—lace back blouses. I love this look because it is clean and simple in front, but has the surprise of lace and a bit of skin in back. You look good coming and going! Since it is the transitional time of year where some still have winter and some spring, I am showing a colder weather version and a warmer weather one. They both are a similar look—turquoise or green pencil skirt and a lace back blouse. I went with black, boots, and a choker for the colder weather look and white with green heels for the spring look. Of course, with the right shoes/boots either can work for any time of the year.

Tips:

• For a trendy and sexy, yet elegant date night look pair the on-trend lace back tops with a pencil skirt
• If you want to show some skin, but don’t want to be too revealing, the lace back top is a fabulous choice
• If you wear a lace back top, think of other ways to draw attention to your back—such as a lovely updo and a statement hair pin
• Consider a neutral top color when rocking a bold pencil skirt and a lace back to draw attention to the lace and the skirt
• If you tuck your top into your pencil skirt and blouse it, you’ll draw attention to your waist and create more of an hourglass look
• If you leave your top untucked, you'll create a longer torso  and hide tummy issues
• Chokers add a dash of Victorian and a pinch of sex appeal—don’t be afraid of this trend, anyone can rock it:
  • If you have looser neck skin or a larger neck:
    • Go for a wider choker in a lace or something with varying edges, which will hide issues and be more forgiving
    • Wear it looser and lower, almost at collar level for the same look without the feeling of having something tight around your neck or creating bulges; this also works better if you have sagging skin
  • If you have a double chin or a little extra right there, go lower rather than higher to not add to this—I tend to go just under halfway or lower
  • Think about what you want to emphasize—lower will draw eyes to your collar bone, shoulders, and chest, whereas higher will emphasize your face more
  • Layer! Chokers work wonderfully with almost any length necklace, other chokers, or even a scarf
  • For a more cohesive and possibly monochromatic look match the color and material with something in your outfit (like black lace)
  • Not sure? Go for a thin one and wear it at your collar like a very short necklace, then work your way up and bigger as you feel comfortable
  • The more bare skin around the choker the more it will stand out and draw attention to that bare skin, so for greater sex appeal consider deeper cut neck lines, cold shoulder, and off-the-shoulder tops, and even put your hair up (if it is longer). To tone down the sex appeal, have your choker peak out of a button down or other shirt that does not show much skin.
  • A longer neck can rock any width of choker
  • A shorter neck may want to go with narrower chokers worn lower, which will add length—a thicker choker at mid neck will likely make your neck look shorter

POW 13: The Wardrobe Essential Pencil Skirt

Do you have a pencil skirt? Pencil skirts are a wardrobe essential, especially for office, dates, and special occasions, but can even work for casual and play. I wear them a lot myself, and have made them key parts of many POW outfits.

It is past time I featured a pencil skirt as a POW. So, let me introduce you to our next Piece of the Week—the pencil skirt! Pencil skirts are slim, body hugging skirts that tend to end around the knee.  The pencil skirt is a classic, feminine, elegant, polished, and sexy wardrobe workhorse. It is also a rarity in that anyone can rock a pencil skirt—young, old, slim, curvy, athletic, short and tall. These flatter everyone. Part of the reason is that they show off the calf part of the leg, which is one body part that tends to look great on all women regardless of size or age (the shoulders are another). The classic also enhances curves, slims, boost confidence, and gives any outfit the chic, cool elegance of a Parisian woman. Every woman should have at least one. I have… well… a lot. So, if you are new to pencil skirts or want to wear them more, check out all my posts and outfits that include them!

Fit and length:

You want a pencil skirt to follow your natural curves and fit at both the waist and hips, which can be harder to find if your waist to hip ratio doesn’t match the “standards” clothes are designed for. My hips are larger than these standards (or waist smaller), and I have a hard time finding something that is smooth across my hips and not too loose across my belly. I recommend if you have fit problems, going for a stretchy fabric such as a knit or ponte, or getting something that fits the bigger body part and getting it altered to fit the smaller part.

While pencil skirts tend to be knee length, you can find or alter them to be different lengths to flatter your height:

• Shorter: If you are shorter or want your legs to look long, go for a pencil skirt that ends above the knee. Don’t go too far above the knee, maybe one to three inches, if you go too far, you lose the lengthening look of the skirt.
• Average height: Look for skirts that hit right at knee length. You will get the lengthening of the pencil skirt and can show off lots of leg.
• Taller: You can rock pencil skirts that go below the knee. They tend to make people look shorter, so keep this in mind (but you can get away with that). I suggest wearing heels if you go with the longer length. You can also wear shorter styles too.

A solid pencil skirt is universally flattering. If your bottom half is a “problem” area for you and you want to hide problems, go for darker solid colors. If you want to show off your bottom half or your curves, consider bright colors and prints.

For this POW, I am featuring the cabi Fall 2016 Sigourney skirt. Unfortunately, the cabi Fall 2016 season has closed, which means this fabulous skirt is no longer available via the traditional means. If you must have this piece, here are some ways you may be able to get it:

But, pencil skirts are amazingly easy to find, and you have lots of option that are available. If you want a turquoise pencil skirt, check out:

• A knee length, Fitted Pencil Skirt from the Karen Michelle Boutique. It comes in many colors and is only $29!
• The Hervé Léger Bandage pencil skirt, which has a vertical “bandage” design that will emphasize curves
•  Amazon also has several

There are so many options in different colors and prints, here are a few that I found:

• Lands’ End has several, including a ponte in bright pink or black, a below-knee “Wear to Work Pencil Skirt” in gray with a pin stripe, and even a Jean Pencil Skirt!
• Ann Taylor as has many great options, such as the classic black “All-Season Stretch Seamed Pencil Skirt,” a red lace pencil skirt, a tweed, and a rose print.
• H&M has two bold print Pencil Skirts for a bargain of $12.99! 
• I’ve gotten three great pencil skirts from Stitch Fix, use my referral link for $25 of your first Fix (here is one, the other two will be showing up during this POW)
• JustFab also has several, including a plaid one, a black one with a bow, a below knee gold shimmer skirt, and a lace one. (Use my referral code to save money)

Beyond Tee Week in Review

Our twelfth POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Fall 2016 Beyond Tee.  This versatile paneled tunic tee, can be anything from a drafting vest, to a wrap top, to a top with a cape! I showed you eleven different ways to wrap and style it and seven different outfit ideas (with some variations based on how you style the tee). With all the different ways style this pieces, we went from a fiery femme fatale, to a fuzzy curvy look, to an elegant caped special occasion outfit, to casual layers, and a high contrast and highly comfortable work look. The Beyond Tee is by far my most versatile POW piece ever!

Beyond POW: Eleven Styling Techniques to Tie the Beyond Tee

As we wrap up the twelfth POW, our versatile Beyond Tee, let’s start by reviewing the eleven different styling techniques I showed you to style this amazing top. Which is your favorite?

1) Basic Beyond Tee

1. Put it on the frontwards way with the tag in back for a lower neckline
2. Make sure the tunic and panels are not tucked in
3. Go!

2) Chic Cape

1. Put it on backwards with the tag in front to for a more elegant back and to show off the back treatment
2. Take each panel and put it over the shoulder of the side it is on (left panel over left should, right panel over right shoulder), and let them hang down your back and over your arms
3. Now go some place chic!

3) Elegant Cape

1. Put it on backwards with the tag in front to for a more elegant back and to show off the back treatment
2. Take each panel and put it over the shoulder of the side it is on (left panel over left should, right panel over right shoulder), and let them hang down your back and over your arms
3. Take the inside corners of each panel and tie them in a knot, then let this hang down your back
4. Now, go be elegant!

4) Sexy Side Wrap

1. Put it on the normal way, with the tag in back for a lower and more date-ready neckline
2. Tuck the bottom of the tunic part of the tee shirt (not the panels) into your skirt
3. Choose the side you want the tie and ends to be, it is best to do it on the side of the panel that overlaps on top of the two panels (left side)
4. Take the panel on the opposite side (right side) and pull is diagonally across the front of your body to the opposite hip
5. Take the panel on the knot side (right, and keeping it on top of the other panel), wrap it diagonally across your chest to the left hip
6. Once it is at your hip, gather it into more of a tie shape than a flat panel
7. Continue with the right panel, wrapping it around your hip and continuing to wrap it behind you, from your right hip to left hip
8. Gather both panels at the left hip and tie them, letting the ends drape down your side

5) Draped Curves

1. Put it on the normal way with the tag in back
2. Take each panel and wrap it around your side to the back, with right panel going to the right and left to the left
3. Cross the panels in back, pulling the right one to the left and left one to the right
4. Bring the panels around to the front
   • Keep the panels at waist level 
   • Keep the panels smoother, not gathered 
   • Check your wrap—the left panels should now be coming around your right side and the right panel around your left side
5. Take the top corner of the bottom of each panel and tie in a knot at your natural waist
6. Let the bottom corners hang down, creating a fun draped look that will emphasize curves while hiding the tummy

6) Long Vest

1. Put it on backwards with the tag in front for a higher and more professional neckline
2. Tuck the bottom of the tunic part of the tee shirt (not the panels) into your skirt
3. Wear the panels down each side as they naturally fall
4. Add a thin print belt at your natural waist for curves

7) Long Professional Vest with two options

Open

1. Put it on the frontwards way with the tag in back for a lower neckline, to better display the shirt collar
2. Tuck the bottom of the tunic part of the tee shirt (not the panels) into your skirt
3. Wear the panel down each side in one of two ways: 
   • Closed: Pull the panels closed in front, leaving minimal gap, and creating an almost dress look
   • Open: Pull the panels more apart, creating an inverted V shape that show more of the bottom of the outfit under than the top

2. Take the two panels and wrap each back on its side—so wrap the right on around to your back on the right and left on the left

4. Tuck the tunic part of the tee into your skirt, creating a vest type of look

1. Put it on the frontwards way with the tag in back for a lower neckline
2. Wear the tee with the tunic part of the tee down over your leggings (or whatever) as a tunic and the panels out and down in their natural state
3. Gather the tunic fabric (not the panels) on one side and knot it high on your hip for a fun look with distinct layers

1. Put it on the frontwards way with the tag in back for a lower neckline
2. Take the two panels and wrap each back on its side—so wrap the right on around to your back on the right and left on the left
3. Tie the two panels in back at about your natural waist
4. Make sure the tunic part of the tee is out (not tucked in) and pull it down over your leggings or whatever as a tunic

5. Gather the tunic fabric on one side and knot it high on your hip for a sassier, slimming take on this tee

Beyond POW: Chic Classy and Faux Fur Sunday Best

Sunday Best POW outfits are special occasion clothes for dinning, theater, opera, holiday parties, church, and other such occasions that need something special. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Beyond Tee from cabi Fall 2016. I show off the versatility of this amazing workhorse tunic tee right off, by showing two slightly different ways you can wear it, which are perfect for a special occasion. For both ways, I draped the two panels over my shoulders. For one way, I left it draped, for more of an open-sleeved look. For the other way I tied a corner of each panel in back, creating a draped cape look. Both ways are elegant and very stylish, perfect for a special occasion.  The lovely draping and flow we get from each style adds a special occasion feel. We can emphasize that with a sophisticated and pretty lace skirt, and a camel faux fur Duchess Scarf (see, it’s even royal), some sexy shoes, gold pearl earrings, and a stunning beaded clutch. Once again, a few elegant and sophisticated additions and we have a classy, special-occasion ready out. The mix of rich, refined colors—plumberry and caramel—compliment the black, and bring class to a tunic tee. Also, the mix of textures—lace, fur, suede—add additional sophistication. The colors, textures, drapes and flows, create a fabulous, striking, elegant special occasion look that will make you feel like a million dollars (and look like it too!).

Tips:

• Mix rich, unexpected colors for a sophisticated look
• Carmel is a great neutral that adds a bit for class to any outfit, plus it is on-trend right now
• When working with a more casual knit, add opulent textures, like lace, suede, and faux fur, to add polish and refinement
• Make a versatile piece work for you, by styling it in unexpected ways, such as draping and tying it
• Add elegant pieces to dress up your special occasion outfit
• For a refined look, limit your pallet to two or three rich colors
• Keep your neutral colors in the majority, with a single pop of a deep, rich color for a sophisticated take
• You can be sexy and somewhat modest at the same time with a knee-length (or longer) pencil skirt and top that dips in the back
• Compliment the outfit by matching your accessories to the color scheme—gold earrings and accents on the shoes to go with caramel, for instance

Beyond Tee Styling Technique: Chic Cape and & Elegant Cape

To grace the either of the cape techniques:

1. Put it on backwards with the tag in front to for a more elegant back and to show off the back treatment
2. Take each panel and put it over the shoulder of the side it is on (left panel over left should, right panel over right shoulder), and let them hang down your back and over your arms
3.  For Chic Cape: you are done
4. For Elegant cape: take the inside corners of each panel and tie them in a knot, then let this hang down your back

Pleated Star Week in Review

Our eleventh POW (Piece of the Week) is the Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End, a pretty pleated skirt with a descending star print. This skirt is perfect for summer, but can be rocked in fall too. With its soft femininity, we tended to mix it with tough contrasts, for fun and pretty, strong and feminine style. We learned how to style it for a geek chic look, a special occasion with a walk on the beach, with a crisp white blouse for work, nautical business casual, and more. We focused on some great transitional summer-to-fall tips and easy changes. No place like Tuesday outfits are casual, comfy clothes for working from home, working at home, parenting (at home), and anything else where comfort is key and you are home. Although they will work for errands and anything else casual. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End. Yes, even a pretty pleated skirt can work for a casual, easy outfit! Just add easy pieces in comfortable knits, practical shoes, and a mom bun and you have a twist on the jeans and tee you may often wear at home or running errands.

As the seasons change, it is especially important to think of layers and versatility in any of our outfits, but especially those for busy days. I love the Recess Tank and Recess Topper as an easy way to layer with style and flair. Both pieces are soft French Terry, making them perfect for casual wear. The Recess Tank is a longer, tunic-length, providing even more versatility (and you can wear it with leggings). You can easily wear them as a set—a modern take on the cami and cardigan combo—or separately. Here I illustrate several ways you can wear the two pieces with this skirt:

You can also play even more with the two together or separately, such as pairing the Recess Topper with another tank, tunic, or top under it. I adore the thumb holes, but you do not have to wear them; you can just push the sleeves back a bit for a more traditional sleeve look.

Tips:

• Transform your pretty pleated skirt into a perfect casual outfit by mixing it with casual tops and accessories
• Look for versatile tops combinations, such as the Recess Topper and Recess Tank, for an easy way to layer and be ready for changes temperatures

Pleated Star POW: Beach Easy Elegant Sunday Best

Outfit Mission Statement:  Mix up your dress up by pairing a feminine, elegant skirt with a high end tee, easy beach hair, and pearls for the perfect look for a special occasion and a stroll on the beach after

 Sunday Best POW outfits are special occasion clothes for dinning, theater, opera, holiday parties, church, and other such occasions that need something special. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End. Since this skirt radiates elegance and femininity, it is easy (and rather predictable) to dress it up, perhaps with a lovely white wrap top, or a soft gray silk draped tank, maybe a light pink chiffon shell, or a navy lace top. With this skirt, dressy is easy. So, I went a more casual route—think beach easy elegance not ballroom polished elegance. In fact, I wore this, on a beach vacation, for my anniversary dinner with my husband. It doesn’t get much more special occasion than that! Instead of a dressy top, think laid back but still nice, such as this hi-low cross design cropped high-end tee. Add pearls, sandals, and a French braid with ponytail for and elegant beach ease.

This look works for summer, fall, and in-between with the mix of dark navy and white georgette. If it cools down, just throw on a wrap, cardigan, or tailored jacket. This is the perfect look for when you want something special, but not stuffy, and when the night might end with a walk on the beach.

Tips:

• Look for unexpected twists on your special occasion outfits, such as a dressy tee with a fancy skirt
• To maintain a certain level of dressy, keep the tee higher quality with special features (such as this hi-low cross design) in dark or bold colors
• For easy beach elegance, add casual elements to your dressy pearls and skirt—such as the loose French braid with ponytail
• Don’t be afraid of a top that is slightly cropped, they may be more flattering than you think. If your tummy is a problem area, look for:
  • A longer crop that covers more and shows little to no skin
  • Special details that will slim and distract, such as the cross design 
  • A looser top that does not cling to the belly
  • Quality fabric that drapes and hides
  • High-wasted bottoms to go underneath that over the problem area
• Think pearls for ease and a touch of both class and grace (plus they nicely pop on darks or bold shirts)
• If you might end up walking on the beach, make sure those sandals are easy to remove
• Keep the look in a limited palette of two to three main colors, such as the white and navy here, if you need to be dressier—broaden the palette is more casual is fine

POW 11: Pleated Star Skirt

Stars. Stars are my thing.

I used to have glow-in-the-dark stars on my bedroom ceiling growing up. I would stargaze in the crisp, clean Maine nights. I accessorize with stars. I love stars. When I saw this Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End I was smitten. Not only were there stars, and in a lovely blue, but it was also a pleated skirt! I adore the fancy skirt trend—from tulle to pleats. This skirt is a great mix of two loves! The cascading star print is fun, but also something that can read professional or dressy, more so than an all-over star print with all the stars the same size. It does read as fairly feminine, which is why I considered it for a Piece of the Week (POW). I like to take garments that have obvious stylings and find some that are less so, while playing with feel of the garment. So, thus, the lovely Pleated Star Skirt from Canvas by Lands’ End became my eleventh POW.

The skirt may also read as summery too you—white, airy, with patriotic stars. While it is great for summer, and a festive Fourth of July, it can totally rock in the fall or winter too. Yes, you can wear white after Labor Day.  In fact, you can even wear this in winter—imagine a cozy, soft sweater for a Christmas or Hanukah look or with a glitzy top for New Years. I’m using this POW as a summer to fall transitions; showing looks that may feel more summer-like or more autumn-like (and possible even variations of both). Stars can rock year round, and you can work this skirt year round too!

If you love the looks but maybe not this particular skirt, feel free to take another pleated skirt or other type of fancier skirt and style with it instead. Much of these outfits and inspirations can easily be restyled with a tulle skirt, a solid color pleated skirt, a lace skirt, or a lovely satin midi skirt. Have fun with it and work it!

Coming up and Working it

Wondering what is coming up and next for Working It? Wondering why the last POW took so long? Here are my great plans, some background, and a sneak peek or five.

First, what happened this summer?

Stitch Fix: Leena Printed Skirt by Renee C, Visperas Crochet Back Top by Skies are Blue, SeaVees sneakers.

Due to a combination of a busy summer and health issues, Working It took a back seat in my life. This blog is a labor of love for style, dressing well, building confidence, and helping people out—along with for my love of cabi and great clothes and outfits. I don’t get paid for it and take time away from other things to do it. In many ways, this is my “me time.” Sometimes we don’t have time or energy for “me time,” and I didn’t this summer. My focused moved to my family and my health. This may happen sometimes. Unless/until I get paid to do this full time, I may need to take breaks and focus elsewhere. Know I’m still here and probably thinking about things to do with the blog and my next post!

Second, what is next for Working It?

I’ve found less time to do the other sorts of posts I want to do, such as tips for various things like travel, thighs, and hot flashes; more style posts; and a bunch go Geek Chic posts. So, I will be working to post a variety of those stuff and fewer POW posts. I will continue to do POW. I think it is important to see how versatile pieces can be and how to work with your own wardrobe to expand your style possibilities. I will just be posting them less frequently than my planned two weeks per POW. I am thinking of moving it to three weeks. I’ll keep you posted when I figure out the plan. The next POW will be posted more in line with the two weeks per POW.

Destructed White Week in Review

Our tenth POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. With these edgy, soft, destructed jeans, we went from pretty in pink for a special occasion to the eating hot dogs at a ball game. We were cool in a boho lace look, mixed soft prints, played with green eyelets, and even rocked a bare shoulder for date night. We went to the boardroom and the breakroom in two different office looks—one nautical & sophisticated and one soft & feminine. The Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans can be rocked from casual to dressy, adding edge and comfort to your style wardrobe and more versatility than you may have thought.

Due to some health issues and a busy summer, this was also our longest “week” yet!

Destructed White POW: Pretty in Pink & Pearls Sunday Best

Outfit Mission Statement: Dress your destructed denim up for a special occasion look with fancy, feminine pieces for a pretty, edgy, feminine, and comfortable outfit!

 Sunday Best POW outfits are special occasion clothes for dinning, theater, opera, holiday parties, church, and other such occasions that need something special. The POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans. Ripped jeans are not what some of us would think of as an appropriate special occasion look. But, you can dress them up to make them work for at least some special occasions. The trick, as with any casual piece, is to combine it with dressier pieces, even over-the-top dressy pieces. Together the outfit averages dressier. Plus, it can be fun to mix pretty with edgy and dressy with casual! Still, these jeans may now work in some special occasion situations. If you cannot do destructed, consider replacing these with white jeans. If you cannot do jean, consider replacing these with white linen pants, such as the Piazza Pant.

But, if you can do destructed white jeans for your special occasion, this outfit can be a lot of fun to rock! You can be pretty, edgy, feminine, and comfortable all at the same time! This may be one of my favorite outfits I’ve done here (and it is one of my favorite sets of photos!).

Tips:

• Dress up your destructed jeans with fancy, dressy pieces; you can even go over the top if you want!
• Play off the edgy destructed look with feminine, pretty pieces—think pinks, pearls, and sparkles
• Grab a pretty shawl to keep you warm in places with two much AC or cooler nights (plus it adds to the dressiness)
• Add a designer clutch or wristlet in a pretty matching color to add style (and convenience)
• Dress your feet up in those sparkly, special occasion shoes and roll up your jeans to show them off
• Put your hair up in a pretty hair accessory for an added touch of class & sophistication (plus you can show off your shoulders)
• Look for dressy accessories with special touches, like ribbon bows in the back, for added touches of fancy
• Choose a peplum top with a gentle ruffle bottom to hide any tummy issues and add more femininity

POW 10: The White Destructed Slim Boyfriend Jean

Do you have white jeans? Do you have multiple pairs of white jeans? I must admit I was first very leery of white jeans. I am a bit of a klutz and am always getting things on me. So white jeans did not seem like a wise option. But I tried my first pair (will it shock you to learn they were cabi?) and loved them. I also didn’t spill anything on them! Now, I am a big fan. They add a fresh, summer look and work well with so many different styles of clothes. They have become a wardrobe staple for me. I’d not say they are a wardrobe essential, but certainly a staple. You don’t need them, but they will become a go-to piece perfect especially for spring and summer.

I have three pairs of white jeans now: boot cut, skinnies, and these fabulous Destructed Slim Boyfriend jeans from cabi Spring 2016. I love the laid back ease with a bit of edge these have. They are slouchy loose without being baggy and are made of a very soft denim that is a pleasure to wear. The contrast stitching is a nice touch and adds to the style of the jeans. They are also an on-trend “vintage white,” which will mix beautifully with other whites. I didn’t plan to make them a POW (Piece of the Week), but Kendria Thompson of Solid Treasures Jewelry suggested them. I wasn’t sure about styling them a more formal office or special occasion. But I decided to take on the challenge. While I found ways to style them for formal offices and special occasions, they still make not be dressy enough (with the rips) to work for these two environments. However, you can easy substitute other white jeans or pants for a similar look without the destruction.

Bardot Week in Review

Our ninth POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Bardot Shirt, a denim shirt with a boho, Southwest feel and lovely navy embroidery. This is the shirt that taught me to love denim shirts! With this boutique-styled denim shirt, we learned how to style a boho southwestern sparkly princess look; a classy denim & linen work look; and an easy, casual boho antiquing look. We learned to style denim-on-denim, different ways to tie and wear a denim shirt, ways to dress up a denim shirt, and more. We took the shirt from the office, to the flea market, to the garden, to summer theater, to a great date night. POW 9: The Southwestern, Boho, Boutique Staple Denim Shirt

I’ve never been a fan of the denim shirt, at least not for me. They look great on other people. They are a wardrobe staple. They are incredibly versatile—easy to dress up and down, wear as layer or wear on its own. But just not my thing.

That is, until I met the Bardot Shirt. Yes, this is another cabi Spring 2016 piece. It is also not your typical denim shirt. It is a faded blue, which you can find many a denim shirt in. But, it also has a boho, Southwest feel with lovely navy embroidery. This shirt makes me think of New Mexico or maybe Arizona. Clear blue sky, turquoise jewelry, horseback riding, red dusty ground, and that desert vibe. It also has a casual, but tailored fit and distressed silver buttons. Plus, each one is unique with the fading of the denim. My cabi stylist, Joni Allen, says this is like a boutique version of a denim shirt, and I must say I agree.

I see this shirt being what a flannel shirt is to me in the winter and late fall—a cozy shirt, a layer, something I throw on when cold or needing the lightest of jackets, something easy, practical, and worn on its own and as a quick go-to addition to nearly any outfit.

Now I’m a big fan of this denim shirt. And I may find my way to loving the more typical denim shirts. Yes, the Southwestern, boho, boutique Bardot Shirt will be my ninth POW (Piece of the Week). If you do not have the Bardot Shirt and are not interested in buying it, feel free to use any denim shirt in the styles I will show you. It will work best if the denim shirt is a bit loose so you can tie it. Otherwise, pretty much any denim shirt will work. You can also replace your denim shirt with a flannel shirt for fall and winter and try similar styles. I did feature a flannel shirt for the third POW, so feel free to follow those styles replacing the flannel shirt with a denim one!

Our eighth POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Margherita Dress. POW 8: The Swingy Summer Staple Sundress

Until fairly recently, I did not have many sundresses. Then my husband pointed this out, so I tried to add more sundresses to my life. Now, I’m not sure why I did not have them! Sundresses are a prefect easy answer to nearly any outfit choice in the summer. Dinning al fresco? Sundress. Summer fair? Sundress. Errands on a hot day? Sundress. Work? Sundress with a cardi or jacket. Cook out? Sundress. Hot date? Sundress. Really anything? Sundress. A sundress is another wardrobe staple we should all have. And you probably were smarter than I and have several already!

For this Piece of the Week, I’m featuring a particular sundress—the cabi Spring 2016 Margherita Dress. This fun, boho-styled dress has a few features that make it not your typical sundress. First, pockets! I love me a dress with pockets! And it doesn’t get much more carefree and fun than a sundress with pockets. It has a longer length, not a true maxi, but longer than what I’d consider a midi length, which is perfect for, say... playing with your toddler. It has a handkerchief hem and is quite fun to twirl in. The straps are not spaghetti straps, but are a bit wider. Some of us may be able to get them to cover our bra straps. The waist is an easy elastic waist—forgiving when you have that extra burger at the cookout. Also, this dress comes in two colors. I’m featuring the classic navy and white one, which is cabi’s regular season dress, but also have a “limited addition” dress in white, yellow, and green geometric pattern. I’ve only seen the latter online, but it looks great too.

Like the other POWs, you can follow the styling tips with something you already have in your closet or something similar you purchase. Look for a longer length sundress, with a full skirt to best match the lovely Margherita Dress.

Run Around Week in Review

Our seventh POW (Piece of the Week) is the cabi Spring 2016 Run Around Skirt. With this sexy, elegant, comfortable, flattering, versatile, go-anywhere skirt, we learned to dress like a boardroom goddess; a comfortable superhero; a bright, comfortable professional; a simply elegant patron of the arts; the sexiest woman in the room; and a lady off to the races!
